The double standard: Mark Kirk (R- ill)
Edited on Fri Jun-04-10 08:51 AM by ChairmanAgnostic
Kirk lied about being awarded a medal while he was a reservist serving in the military. Not once, but repeatedly. His campaign staff still has not erased all the times he made that claim on the net.

Kirk lied about being in charge of the Pentagon War Room to a bunch of Chinese visitors. And he repeated that claim in election advertising.

Kirk lied about being shot at in a plane over Iraq, and repeated that claim several times on the air, on the net, and in campaign material.

Kirk, simply put, is a liar who will say anything, including puffing up his resume, to achieve higher office.

If Kirk were a Democrat, the media and GOP driven storm would be worse than Katrina. But, he's not. He's an ultra-conservative GOPer, who is the poster child of ultra-conservatives. Therefore, silence is the rule, especially in local media. Finally, the Chicago Tribune gave him this platform to excuse his behavior:

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mark Kirk accepted responsibility Thursday for a series of misstatements about his Navy Reserve career, including that he served in the Gulf War, that he once commanded the Pentagon war room and that he came under fire while flying intelligence missions over Iraq.

Kirk blamed several of the inaccuracies on his attempts to translate "Pentagonese" for voters or on inattention by his campaign to the fine points of his 21-year military career. In an effort to stem the political damage, he also released his military personnel evaluations and promised to fix any errors found by anyone, from the media to his political opponents.

"I would describe them as mistakes ... and for me going forward if you see a problem, fix it," Kirk said during an appearance before the Tribune editorial board. "And when you're in this environment, you should probably follow a strict policy of only talking about what is absolutely documented."

1. OH MY GAWD. He did it again.
Capt. Kirk wrote the suntimes that his most exciting time as a congressman was when he came under fire while in Eastern Europe. Except, a year earlier, he was taped claiming that he never came under fire during that particular junket.
