Here in NY, there seems to be no primary to pick who we get to vote for in november for governor. Andrew Cuomo was coronated as the dem nominee, and the republicans apparently met to coronate their pick. this is the governor.... why don't they let the voters decide who they want to be the choice in november!!

I think this is one of the big problems we have along with the campaign finance issue. The parties decide who we get to vote for. Now, in some states we have watched as party favorites have gone down to someone they didn't want. in pennsylvania specter lost to specter. and rand paul beat out someone in his state. so we see on both sides the desire to purge when we had the opportunity.

I think this is part of the problem. we aren't choosing our candidates as much as we get to vote for who the dem and republican big wigs decide we should pick from. people who will play ball and tow the line. is that what our system is set up for??? no wonder we can't get anything done for us.

ok. i'm done.

1. I'm visiting in NY now
and read the article about how the GOP's PTB picked Rick Lazio to run against Cuomo for governor. I guess NY isn't the only state that does it that way but it did seem kind of weird. Of course on the positive side you probably aren't bombarded with endless ads for primary candidates like we are in CA.

And on another positive side, the GOP of NY picked Rick Lazio to run for governor. That worked out so well for them when he ran against Hillary for the NY Senate. :eyes:

2. i don't think they'll beat cuomo no matter who they put. though where is rudy...
no scratch that... glad i haven't heard his name. the thought gives me nightmares. the only ads i have seen are for paladino who i despise. but i would have been interested to see who the voters would have picked between him and lazio. also, his supporters say they will not support him as a 3rd party candidate because they think that perot lost the election for bush. so they think they have a chance. i hope not. things are bad enough now. i feel bad for patterson because he was in an untenable position from the start. don't understand why they couldn't tax shares traded on the stock exchange... just a penny each would bring millions!! it's ok to tax anything we buy, but not sales of stock. oh well. lets just lay off low level state workers. amazing the support there is for that around here.

3. That's what's happening in CA
Can't get any budget/money stuff through the state legislature without a 2/3 majority vote. Republicans will not agree to any kind of increase in anything that even resembles a tax. Meanwhile the university system is laying off so many non faculty positions and increasing fees for students.

The only thing I've heard from Meg "Buy It Now" Whitman, who will probably be the GOP nominee for Governor is more tax cuts and more layoffs.

THere is an initiative on the ballot, though it won't happen until the November election, to change the rule requiring a a 2/3 majority vote on budget issues to a simple majority. Mr Pip says there is no way it will pass. The 2/3 thing has been in place for 30+ years and it has been devastating to CA but the people here are just as short sited as they are elsewhere. Sad really.
