Fairhaven Land Advertised For 'Caucasians Only'
Fairhaven Land Advertised For 'Caucasians Only'

It was a shocking ad for Mandi Costa of New Bedford.

There was a notice in the New Bedford Standard Times newspaper indicating land for sale in the town of Fairhaven, but it wasn't for everyone.

"No way, this cannot be true," said Costa.

The ad read, "The said land shall not be sold, leased or rented to any person other than of the Caucasian race or to any entity of which any person other than that of said race shall be a member, stockholder, officer or director."

For Costa, it had a too familiar ring. "Obviously it's in somebody's will or is an oversight on somebody's part. But this is wrong, this is unfair, I felt like I was back in the 60's," she said.

In fact, records at Fairhaven Town Hall reveal a deed dating back to 1946, when the property was subdivided and a covenant established which the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD) calls "unlawful and unenforceable under Massachusetts statute."

8. I dunno
Part of me would like to see the Civil Rights commission crawl up the owner's backside.

But then part of me says: if they hadn't said that maybe somebody like me would have unknowngly given this butt-monkey good money.

The nice thing about loud-mouth boors is; you know who NOT to shop with.

4. And if this were Alabama instead of Massachusetts, this thread would be miles long.
Racism isn't isolated to one region of the country.

6. Yep, we've got our share of racist assholes here in MA
But I'm very grateful that they seem to be in the minority.

5. Massachusetts? That reminds me of a 25 year old Chris Rock joke
Watched an old movie with very young Chris Rock.

His closing joke was, "I was in South Africa the other day. No Wait, it was Boston."

7. The Standard Times is looking foolish on this one.
Bad mistake on their part.
