AZ Gov: My Dad Died Fighting The Nazis In Germany (Not Quite)
http://tpmlivewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/06/az-gov-my-dad-died-fighting-the-nazis-in-germany-not-quite.php

It's not exactly Richard Blumenthal or Mark Kirk territory. And yet...

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) told The Arizona Republic in a recent interview that her father "died fighting the Nazi regime in Germany."

Only problem is, that's apparently not quite true.

According to the Arizona Guardian, Brewer's father, Wilford Drinkwine, died of lung disease. In California. In 1955.

During the war, the Guardian reports, Brewer's father was a civilian supervisor for a naval munitions depot in Nevada. Brewer's spokesperson told the newspaper that he inhaled toxic fumes while working there that eventually killed him -- and that the governor wasn't "embellishing the story at all." Drinkwine was on full medical disability when he died, the spokesman said.

5. I called her office and
the one I talked to laughed when I told her. She said she wanted to go find that and read it since she hadn't heard about. She also laughed and agreed when I said Brewer needs to come clean and quit telling this junk since it really is an embarrassment to we Arizonans. She agreed again. I got a feeling from most I have talked with in her office they aren't really to happy about her either. Let me explain that in Arizona it is possible for those who don't support her to be assigned to her office.

7. Well, if someone really played the Hitler card on her ...

I suppose she's allowed to play it back. Which means no one should ever play the Hitler card.

Her father did die as a direct result of his involvement in the war, and I guess making munitions that fought Hitler could, by syllogism, be construed (in a stretch) as "fighting Hitler."

But this is all getting really, really insane lately. Can we have a moratorium on people's' war fibs? It doesn't make the Arizona law any less despicable.

Lay off Dick Blumenthal and I'm willing to let this pass. (Though, in my own best interest, I'm holding Mark Kirk to higher scrutiny).

8. The first comment on the story has this gem:
"The constant demands for empathy while being incapable of showing it to anyone else should be listed in the DSM-IV as a prime symptom of wingnut disorder."

9. About her father
Brewer was born in Hollywood, Calif. Her father, Perry Drinkwine, was a civilian supervisor at a Navy munitions depot in Hawthorne, Nev., and she spent the first ten years of her life at the base.MacEachern, Doug, “Snapshots of the next governor,” The Arizona Republic

(Phoenix), December 7, 2008(6)MacEachern, Doug, “Snapshots of the next governor,” The Arizona Republic (Phoenix), December 7, 2008

When she was 11, her father’s health—ravaged by the constant exposure to the chemicals on the base—forced the family to move to California for dry desert air and clean ocean breezes. Drinkwine survived just a year before succumbing to lung disease. That experience prompted Brewer to study to become a radiology technician.

17. My Dad was just an air raid warden in WWII.
He was excused from service because of me and the fact he was a journeyman electrician
& deemed important to the war effort. In the Viet Nam era I was 4 F and plus that I regularly
demonstrated against the war, but then I'm not running for anything.
