1. At some point it's likely.
Might not be in the near future, but we're never going to be able to wean ourselves completely off of petroleum. Not as long as we like plastic products.

2. Yep. Read somewhere that BP is selling their rights to this reserve...
to neighboring companies.

Same game, different logo.

3. Yes, or we accelerate the inevitable decline of our civilization. Without a steadily
increasing supply of oil, our civilization contracts and then collapses.

7. Of course it will.
I don't think it will even stop. That can't be the only deep water well out there. The same peopl screaming for Obama to fix this already will be the ones screaming for more drilling. You don't really think the drill baby drill crowd is going to change their minds. sigh

10. Shell is drilling in even deeper water
at their Perdido site in the Gulf of Mexico.

I read somewhere that BP has had over 750 safety citations over the last five years. The next highest number for an oil major is 8. Something is wrong at BP.

15. Hard to say for all we know
BP might not have been paying enough bribes, providing enough drugs or screwing the right people to knock those numbers down. They all need thorough reviews of every site operating now and they should have to pay for it. That won't happen either, the teabagger crowd and media will scream socialism and govt. over reaching.

We'll go after it.

Or invade and occupy it.

19. Clean energy will be attacked and destroyed by oil interests.
Like before in history.

20. I'm hoping this gives other companies and countries incentive. And this may
cost BP so much money and concern others, that even they may get into the picture. If there's a chance to make money, you can bet they'll be on board. I think Obama has ratcheted up his push for alternative energy, and the reaction around the world may put pressure on other governments as well. Glass half full. :)

16. Absolutely. But we need to change our fundamental mindset about this stuff
Safety must never ever take a backseat to profits, schedules, politics or anything else. We must get back to a culture where we respect quality and craftsmanship where we listen to the scientists and engineers.

Every single major (and minor) disaster can be traced directly back to some bean-counter not listening to the engineers and putting profit ahead of quality.

18. I've said this many times before: we will consume all oil reserves on the planet, eventually.
This is a blip in the radar. Too many people with vested interests in the current global energy supply arrangement.
