Conservatives seek gov't solutions after oil spill
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hB4MkDFpEq9b5qRF9F-fUtyQs5yQD9G35UBG1

By EMILY WAGSTER PETTUS (AP) – 4 hours ago

Ben Brooks, a lawyer and Republican state senator from coastal Alabama, says he's no fan of big government but he expects an aggressive federal response as a gunky oil spill threatens the Gulf of Mexico.

"There's nothing inherently contradictory in saying we believe in smaller government and demanding that the government protect public safety," Brooks said.

All along the Gulf Coast, where the tea party thrives and "socialism" is a common description for any government program, conservatives who usually denounce federal activism suddenly are clamoring for it.

Take Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, a Republican elected in 2007 when Democrat Kathleen Blanco opted not to seek re-election after she was widely panned for a bumbling response to Hurricane Katrina two years earlier. snip

Jindal, a possible 2012 presidential candidate, has demanded a stronger response from the Obama administration, accusing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers of dragging its feet in approving Louisiana's plans for protective berms — a plan that took three weeks to approve. snip

Jindal is a fiscal conservative who made headlines last year by rejecting some federal stimulus money, then distributing other stimulus funds by handing out oversized cardboard checks to local officials.

Louisiana State University political science professor Kirby Goidel said Jindal's call for larger federal involvement in the oil spill management contradicts the governor's usual persona.

1. Hey, Brooks
"There's nothing inherently contradictory in saying we believe in smaller government and demanding that the government protect public safety," Brooks said.

Umm. Yes, there is.

3. They are only against government when it applies to someone else
When they get something, they will be right there standing in line.

All those who are against Social Security will be the first ones in line at the SS office to make sure they get theirs.

Out of one side of their mouth they are scramming to kill government and the other side they are crying for more assistance.

4. "There's nothing inherently contradictory"
Yes there is, Ben Brooks. It makes you a whiny-ass titty baby who wants something for nothing, who refuses to pay for anything unless it inures to your direct benefit, and means you're a selfish greedhead who deserves to be left in the middle of lawless Somalia with nothing but the clothes on your back and a spork to let you fend for yourself in your small government paradise. I'm guessing you'd either be dead by sundown or dancing for the amusement of a group of ruthless teen-agers with automatic rifles as they shot at your feet.

7. I'd donate to a charity that sends tea baggers to Somalia!
Does one exist?
Maybe the AEI or Heritage Foundation could set it up.

5. They are only against government when it involves feeding/housing the poor and providing
healthcare to minorities. Corporate welfare is ok though.

9. But But But.....THAT'S KOMMANISM!!!!!!
Jindal, with his high whiny voice, has about as much chance of being nominated for president as
someone as lame as Sarah Palin has of being nominated for vice-president.

Oh, wait.

Never mind.

10. politics
That is not what conservatives believe.

Conservatives know very well that there is no government solution sitting on a shelf somewhere for a broken oil gusher leaking a mile underwater. They are attempting to frame this as a failure on the part of the government to protect public safety. Does anyone really think the government can do anything?

BP broke it, let BP figure it out.

Allowing the GOP to turn this into "Has Obama fixed the leak yet?" during an election year is ridiculous. Too many people who should have known better have been playing right into their hands by calling on Obama to "do something", wave his magic wand or what have you.

12. The GOVERNMENT is supposed to protect us from corporate assholes
Edited on Wed Jun-02-10 03:06 PM by texastoast
But Reagan worked really hard to keep that from happening and here we all are, the "beneficiaries" of piss-on economics and deregulation. Then along came enabler minor Clinton and enabler major shrubbie.

And now we have a Congress who are in the corporate pockets.

So how does the GOVERNMENT protect us from greedy bastards on both hands?
