Why has BP skimmed only 63% as much in 6 WEEKS as their application said they could skim per DAY ?

If, as Bloomberyg and the Houston Chronicle report, BP promised, in its permit application that it could handle a leak 10 times the size of the Deepwater Horizon gusher, and had contracts with companies that could SKIM more oil IN ONE DAY than BP has now skimmed in 6 WEEKS, why are we allowing them to diddle around with dispersants and ignore sound solutions?

BP ready for spill bigger than Gulf disaster, plan says

By ALISON FITZGERALD Bloomberg News

WASHINGTON — BP said in permit applications for drilling in the Gulf of Mexico that it was prepared to handle an oil spill more than 10 times larger than the one now spewing crude into the waters off the Southern United States.

“Proper execution of the procedures detailed in this manual will help to limit environmental and ecological damage to sensitive areas as well as minimizing loss or damage to BP facilities in the event of a petroleum release,” the company said in its oil-spill response plan, filed with the U.S. Minerals Management Service in 2008.

The company listed as its worst-case scenario a blowout in an exploratory well 57 miles west of the disaster, in a valley on the seafloor known as Mississippi Canyon. It's about 33 miles off the coast of Louisiana. Such a blowout could have spewed 250,000 barrels a day, according to the 582-page plan.......

.......BP's plan says it has contracts with the Marine Spill Response Corp. of Herndon, Va., and the National Response Corp. of Great River, N.Y., to contain and clean up any spills through the use of dispersant chemicals sprayed from airplanes and skimming vessels that would suck up oil-filled water......

......

BP's plan says that those companies have enough oil-skimming vessels to remove about 492,000 barrels of oil a DAY(sic) from the water. The companies have the capacity to store 299,000 barrels a day, according to the plan.

BP spokesman John Curry said this weekend that so far, the company, through its contractors, has deployed 91 skimming vessels that have picked up a total of 312,952 barrels of oily water mixture from the spill that has gushed for almost six weeks....

12. Most mature adults are able to multitask.

The lame ass excuse of "we can't suck the oil, it's too crowded around the drillhead" is simply that, a lame ass excuse. There are multiple oil plumes extending far beyond visible sight of the drillhead. It's criminal that this decades old technology, which is actually quite effective, hasn't been utilized yet.

:grr:

5. Note that what they do catch is "oily water mixture." I think these guys have more bullshit
than they do oil. And that's saying something.

11. I wonder if the dispersant chemicals' effect on oil make the job of skimming more difficult?
In other words does the dispersants tend to keep oil at deeper levels than the skimmers operate?

Kicked and recommended.

Thanks for the thread, Faryn.

15. Huge K&R WHY IS BP still in Charge? Robt Reich repeats what we've said here: BP values profits
we need the gov't in charge of decision making, so that priority is placed on people's lives, wildlife, and the environment, more generally

16. What?
Are those companies now working in the gulf?

Did any government employee check to see if the companies could do as BP claimed?

Why hasn't the govt. hired these companies? Or others?

Was thinking today that the govt. HAS to start telling us everything.

How much dispersant was applied today?

How much oil was skimmed today?

How much oil escaped today?

They are hiding information from us. This reminds me of bushco.

17. Because they make more money using equipment on normal wells. Obviously.
And they are going to need that money to hire defense lawyers.
