BP is spending ~ a billion a day dealing with this spill.
Each of the drill ships (3 or 4 now?) commands $500,000 a day. The ROV ships probably cost more. There's a stinking fleet of support ships around the drilling site. How much did all that mud they spewed into the water cost? And the constant PR campaign? Yada yada. Just how goddamned much money is getting spent on actual cleanup (including the cost of toxic dispersants) and remuneration of everybody screwed out of their jobs?

6. one billion = 1,000 million
1,000 = 1.0E3

Three orders of magnitude difference between a million and a billion.

9. Gee. A master's degree in mathematics and I didn't know that.
I said one ship costs around half a million a day to lease and there are many of them. Other than that, I pointed out a few obvious costs without any dollar estimates.

A billion is how many orders of magnitude larger than a point of view?

18. BP is not spending a billion a day. They are spending 24 million a day.
So you are off by a factor of 40x.

Where did you get this estimate of a billion a day?

3. AND all the needed was a $500,000 cut off valve
that would have stopped this. Course Cheney would have to bear some of the cost, he approved not installing one.

7. BP's CEO said the total costs would come in at $3 billion....
so they're not spending "a billion a day".

11. BP's estimate quoted in the media yesterday was roughly in the billion a day range.
Where are your figures coming from?

15. No, he said they've spent a billion dollars TO DATE (not a day)...
LONDON (Reuters) – BP will seek to patch up its battered share price by reassuring investors the cost of cleaning up the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is manageable and will not affect dividends, British media reported on Wednesday.

The oil major's Chief Executive Tony Hayward will tell investors in a call this week the cost of the clean up -- that has so far spiralled to nearly $1 billion -- can be easily absorbed by cash generated from its operations around the world, the Daily Mail said.

BP's failure to stop the oil spill prompted a plunge in the company's share price on Tuesday and the Obama administration said it opened a criminal investigation.

"If our current efforts were to fail and we have to wait for the relief wells to be drilled and had six months of clean-up, we estimate the cost at $3 billion," Hayward told the Daily Mail.

Just did a google search...
Numbers all over the place. My billion figure came from a broadcast report. My apologies for not double checking first, though there doesn't seem to be much consensus on the web.

My point still remains. I keep hearing over and over about how much money BP is spending, I don't hear stories about relieved fishermen and tourism operators who are relived that a BP check will keep their business afloat.

12. Media story yesterday gave BP's cost estimate for the disaster so far.
They just didn't provide any breakdown, and the numbers look curious due to BP's promise to cover "legitimate" harm caused to gulf businesses that are in peak season.
