With BP stock prices plummeting, what multi-national will end up the big winner in this?
BP has lost about a third of it's market capitalization since the spill and that doesn't show any signs of turning around. At some point they'll either be bought or even potentially end up in Chapter 11. I think the question six or ten months down the line is who's going to buy them.

that their share value is now down to the March 2009 figure then what's the big deal ?

If you check their history you'll find that the way in which they were privatised years ago was to fend off unwelcome attention from Kuwait who were seeking to own it at the time.

edit to add :

BTW - China could buy it outright and probably would given the opportunity.
