We have the guns, but no butter.
Some of the things that are under-funded or unfunded because of the one trillion dollar (that's a one with twelve zeros behind it) military budget:

Child abuse
Roads
Bridges
Educational grants
Teachers
Policemen
Firemen
Aid to cities and towns
Welfare
Food Stamps
Training programs
Treatment programs
Head Start

and the list goes on and on.....

Some of the things we can afford:

$243 million dollar F-35s
$200+ million dollar C-17s
$5+ billion dollar destroyers
$500+ million dollar Littoral Combat ships
$2.8 billion dollar submarines (to the tune of two each and every year)
$11.5 billion dollar aircraft carriers
$100 million dollar Ospreys
$83 million dollar F/A-18s
$89,000 155mm Precision Guided Munitions
$1.4+ billion dollar amphibious transport ships

and this list goes on and on also.......

5. I agree with you
but

Child abuse - state/county issue
Roads & Bridges - highway system yes but county and local roads? local issue.
Teachers - local/county/state issue
Policemen - local/county/state issue
Firemen - local/county/state issue

the feds can provide *some* funding here but the bulk of the $$$ can and should come at the local level.

7. Around 1992 I thought
we had a chance for changing our national priorities. Cold war over, base closings, Clintons elected. I thought this was the end of deficits (it was for a short while) and that common sense had won out over ideology.

But no.......

Selection and 9/11 happened.

9/11. The best thing that happened to the Rethuglicon Party since the Soviets got the bomb.

Just my dos centavos
