1. Are all the ROVs leaving?
It was a cool shot, though - I counted four, maybe five ROVs around the blow out preventer. But it looked as though they were all lifting off. Maybe it is shift change or recharge time.

Read the last few posts on Thread #9 - there's discussion of the blade freezing or being jammed. :(

11. I think so. Inch thick riser + drill pipe while getting creamed with high pressure oil...
was too much for what I see as a relatively fragile machine.

I'm guessing that 'ole Gramps the Clamp (Hydraulic Shear) may be tried next. In that case, the cut will be anything but clean and the alternate hood will need to be used.

14. No small number of BP employees would probably love to hang the people responsible for this...
A small number of careless greedy assholes made this happen, against the wishes of workers present at the site.

Now everyone is in danger of losing their jobs, and hundreds if not thousands are doing their level best to mitigate the damage.

There's gotta be some serious anger among the BP workers.

...and this is worse, to be using an EZ-out to remove a bolt after the head shears off.

And then the EZ-out snaps off.

Either are frustrating, and this reminds me of that a little.

Edited on Wed Jun-02-10 09:53 AM by lumberjack_jeff
The inner pipe will inevitably shift, putting the blade in a bind. Happens. Every. Time.

They have to cut the outer pipe, spread the cut edges apart, then cut the inner pipe.

riser from flopping around. I find it very hard to believe there is a loose pipe complicating this cut.

41. The inner pipe doesn't have to shift axially to cause a problem.
And as you near the end of the cut through the inner pipe, it will shift, particularly when it's under the kind of forces this pipe is.

32. I know what it's like to break a drill bit and have had my battles with saw blades.
The only thing I can think of (last resort) is to have one of the ROVs cut the wire blade on either side of the pipe. That will free the Cut saw to move back to the surface for a new blade. Meanwhile, hopefully the ROVs can pull out the piece of blade still in the cut.

40. The drawback there is leaving the diamond wire in there, then going back to cut through it...
...part of the analogy with broken drill bits-- now there's a hardened steel thing in the way of the work.

Damn, broken bits are never fun, and leaving the hardened steel diamond encrusted leftover bit could be a problem when they go back to it.

I still think there's a small chance that the drill pipe inside had enough play to shift enough to go out of alignment with the riser and jam things up.

I tend to agree with you on the likelihood that it's not moving, though.

News Alert: Effort to contain Gulf oil stalls with stuck saw
10:04 AM EDT Wednesday, June 2, 2010
--------------------

SCHRIEVER, La. — Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen is saying that a saw has become stuck as it was cutting through a pipe on a busted well, stalling the latest attempt to contain the Gulf oil gusher.

Allen said Wednesday the goal is to free the saw and finish the cut later in the day. This is the second major cut in the effort to contain — not plug — the nation's worst spill.

Allen says the first cut with giant shears was successful overnight.

The best chance at plugging the leak involves a relief well that is at least two months from completion.

Getting the saw stuck was a huge fuckup.

In a prior life, I designed piping systems for refineries, tankers and nuclear plants. Given the size of the pipe, the previous flow, the pressures described, the shape of the kink and the fact that it was a pipe within a pipe, I expected to see 5-10x flow increase once the pipe was cut off.

... I know that the official estimate is that the flow will go up 30-50%. I think that's underestimated by an order of magnitude for pr reasons.

Dumbfucks.

51. It would suck. But I don't think it's likely.
They've cut signficantly through the upper pipe, the lower pipe contains several concentric pipes, it would be very difficult to break it there.

Look at the riser pipe above the bop, it fell to the seafloor and kinked without damaging the pipe below the bop.

77. I kind of doubt that there's another wire saw just like the one down there.
Judging from the look of it's carriage and parts and details, it looked to be custom made for this operation.

Not that they couldn't build another, or haven't already.

It's a round the clock deal, and Oceaneering is a HUGE part of it, the ROVs, cameras, and the Saws, though a different company makes the diamond wire saw and Oceaneering modified it for this project, IMHO.

63. I knew of an old single-handed sailor
When a storm would blow and his ship would get knocked down and stuff would break, before rushing into action, he would pour himself a glass of brandy. His philosophy; "one damn thing happens after another". He felt that rushing into poorly-considered action is more likely to cause additional problems than waiting three minutes will.

This is definitely "one damn thing after another" territory. Getting the saw stuck was a huge, huge fuckup. I would be *very* surprised if the current leak rate is any less than four times the previous one.

Idiots.

Can any torch-cutting technology work at this depth?

And even though there isn't an oxygen source there, it could be dangerouse.

Hi pressure water cutting, maybe?

I think they're starting over with a higher cut....that would have two advantages:
1.) An uneven cut could later be cleaned-up with a lower cut

2.) The inner drill pipe would move less the closer it is to the crimp

<09:37> <asadotzler> jedigras: They cannot simply unbolt the riser flange because inside of the riser is a second pipe called the drill pipe (DP) and that pipe is pinched above the flange (see the big bend in the riser up there where all the oil's been spewing for the last month?) and pinched by rams in the BOP below the flange. If the DP can't move, then unbolting, even if it could be done, wouldn't do you any good.

97. Ohhhh! That's what that was. I was doing some work a few minutes ago and
I have the ROV cam up on the bigscreen during Andrea Mitchell's hour. I looked over and there's this huge rock looking blob and my mind was trying to sort it out, lol.

So, that's what frozen methane hydrate in an oily environment looks like.

It now looks like that ROV might be coming topside.
