TRIVIAL Pursuit co-inventor Chris Haney, a Canadian journalist, has died in a Toronto hospital at 59 after a long illness.

Haney and his friend Scott Abbott came up with the idea for the blockbuster board game in Montreal after arguing over a Scrabble match.

Trivial Pursuit, launched in 1981, has gone on to sell more than 100 million copies worldwide.

Haney was a picture editor on The Gazette in Montreal when he invented the quiz game with Abbott, a sports reporter for the Canadian Press, a national news agency.

The pair came up with the idea over a lunch-hour game of Scrabble in a bar in December 1979.
