'Money is killing us,' Gulf fisherman says
Source: CNN

“Money,” says Clint Guidry, acting president of the Louisiana Shrimp Association, “is killing us.”

BP is paying fishermen up to $3,000 a day to help clean up the oil, according to a contract between BP and one of the fishermen obtained by CNN.

He says the nine fishermen who were brought to the hospital while working for BP are unwilling to talk because they fear losing their jobs. The men suffered symptoms such as shortness of breath, irritated nasal passages, nausea and headaches.

“Working for BP is their livelihood, since they can’t fish anymore,” Guidry said. “BP is putting food on their tables. These gentlemen won’t talk publicly because they’re scared for their well-being and scared for their families.”

3. That is EXACTLY whyBP ran out and recruited locals to work on the cleanup and offered
to pay them so much money. It is hush money. It is just too bad that the folks down there really have no choice..it is either keep quiet..or starve.

5. Getting them to acquiesce in their own murders.
Just so there is something to provide for the family.

You can call these men whores. I think they are the bravest, most loving men I ever heard of.

10. That's BP's long term plan...
get them out there to clean up the mess. Get them fucked up with all sorts of toxins. any law suit will drag on for years and years. In the mean time, the original complainants will have died off. problem solved.

Remember they were the ones contracted to clean up the exxon valdez, they have a long history in delaying things.

What I fear will happen instead is: the fines that will be exacted via the clean water act will cause BP to go into receivership. At that point, it's anyones guess whether anyone will see a single dime.

I predicted a month ago that BP won't survive this. I was shot down at the time by many people here on DU. It's now being actively talked about that BP won't survive this.

How then will anyone get any sort of financial compensation. Perhaps that is BP's long term plan, to die now, the rise like a Phoenix someplace else?
