First oil washes ashore in Mississippi: Governor Barbour says don't panic, "it's not toxic"
A thin, two-mile long strand of caramel-colored emulsified oil-- the consistency of hair mousse - washed ashore Tuesday morning on Mississippi's Petit Bois Island, prompting a precautionary shutdown of some state waters to commercial and recreational fishing, state officials said.

"This is the first significant amount of oil residue to hit Mississippi since the Deepwater Horizon explosion six weeks ago," Gov. Haley Barbour said. "While it's the first, it won't be the last."

During a news conference in Jackson on Tuesday, Barbour said this is no reason for "anybody to panic." The state's beaches and ports remain open, and Barbour said, "We're told that it's not toxic."

2. Maybe Barbour is willing to take his ass out to Petit Bois and swim in it for a day.
Bring out the boats and cases of beer. We'll have us an outing, except he'll be the only one swimming in it.

14. hey if its not toxic it is not toxic
that would be great because apparently this oil well has non toxic oil, that is great for the green future of the planet, we need more of this non toxic kind of oil. To show how non toxic it is the governor should go swimming in it with his dog.

13. well if it is not toxic then they had better let the people
do their commercial and recreational fishing. I would sue the state for not letting me take fish out of non toxic oil. If it is not toxic why cant they take the fish out of it and sell them for food?

God I hope for some massive karma for these people.

27. More oil that was underwater washing ashore
Part of the plumes BP wanted to out-of-sight and out-of mind and deny their existence.

And then this statement from a Governor.

Reassuring, not so much.

This is the 2nd time I'm reading about oil being detected not far from shore, but nothing much being done to preemptively keep it from reaching the shore.

How Close Is The Oil To The Alabama Coast?
Published: Mon, May 31, 2010 - 10:09 pm CST
Last Updated: Tue, June 01, 2010 - 10:45 am CST
DAUPHIN ISLAND, Alabama - After getting tips of oil sightings near Dauphin Island, we chartered a boat to see what we could find. We can tell you what appears to be the same thick muck that has been washing ashore in Louisiana is not far from our stretch of the Gulf Coast.

Monday morning, we headed South from Dauphin Island's East end. We cruised deep into the Gulf; there was nothing for miles other than the smell of a diesel like odor and what looked like a sheen on the water. Then about 20 to 22 miles South of Dauphin Island we spotted what appears to be thick patches of oil. Surrounding the mess, what looks like an oil sheen.

28. Okay, Governor. Start swimming.
With your wife, and/or mistress. Go fishing. Make sure you feed your family what you catch. On national live TV.

Just please don't wear a thong.
