It's not on the air yet. It's not shot yet. There's no pilot yet. Hell, there might not even be a script yet.
But Comedy Central developing an animated project about Jesus Christ has the biggest names in the TV watchdog business forming a Super Best Friends protest super-group to preemptively smite the show.
Brent Bozell (president, Media Research Center), Tony Perkins (president, Family Research Council), Michael Medved (talk radio host), Bill Donohue (president, Catholic League), Rabbi Daniel Lapin (American Alliance of Jews and Christians) and, of course, Tim Winter (president, Parents Television Council) are joining forces to form the Coalition Against Religious Bigotry.
That's right -- CARB.
(If only it wasn't the Coalition of the Religious Against Bigotry because then it could be "CRAB").
Comedy Central's "JC" is currently in development, which means it's still a couple steps away from becoming a Go project. The show is about Jesus trying to live as a regular guy in New York City and wanting to escape the shadow of his "powerful but apathetic father" (more details here). With Comedy Central having recently censored frequent parenting group target "South Park" for trying to portray the Prophet Muhammad, some Christian leaders see the development of a Jesus cartoon as exhibiting an offensive double standard.

http://livefeed.hollywoodreporter.com/2010/06/protest-supergroup-to-smite-comedy-centrals-jesus-project.htmlYa see? Fox News was right all along by parading all those poor children whose godless public schools wouldn't let them pray in class! In the US, Christians are
NEVER respected and are in a deep deep crisis! :sarcasm:
But really, these people railing against this cartoon would yawn and go back to their regular day-by-day tasks if the cartoon targeted one of the Hindu gods, Muhammad, the Buddha, Xenu, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or any other non-Christian prophet. Because they believe that America is a Christian nation, and Christianity deserve 150% respect all the time.
In fact as I am writing this the South African newspaper that published this editorial cartoon mocking Muhammad
issued an apology to Muslims a few days ago. Hmm, I would never imagine Comedy Central sucking it up to the Christian right protesters (who so far haven't threatened to behead or stone or physically attack anyone yet) given that
South Park,
The Daily Show, and other CC shows have mocked the Christian right regularly. (if anything it's only the
FUNDAMENTALIST Christians not the tolerant, minding-their-own-business types who are being persecuted in the US) (Do note that Tim Winter is a liberal though, but I think he might as well be what'd you call an accommodationist, faitheist, whatever because of his participation in the socially conservative/pro-religious PTC)
If these groups fail and CC's proposed show succeeds maybe we'll hear the religious rightists pushing for a blasphemy law like those in Ireland (yes Ireland recently passed a law criminalizing blasphemy) and the Arab World.
