I'm new to this site and I just wanted to introduce myself. I didn't see a new members forum so I figured it would fall under General.

Up until recently I was a regular member of Dailykos. In looking for a Democratic blog with a different flavor I came across Democratic Underground. DU seems great so far, and I also like that there appears to be quite a few veterans. I'm currently on active duty in the US Army and I'm also a former Marine reservist aka "weekend warrior."

My hobbies: Chess and Numismatics (coin collecting).

My views:

Taxes: For a progressive tax system.

Abortion: Pro-choice

Drugs: For legalizing marijuana across the board. I'm on the fence with hard drugs.

Capital punishment: Against. Mostly because innocent people inevitably get the chair.

Economic systems: For well regulated capitalism.

Health care: I view it as a human right. Nobody should ever be told "F*** you pay me!" when trying to be treated.

The military: For a strong national defense. For interventionism in some cases, but not all.

Welfare: It worked for Joe Samuel the plumber Wurzelbacher, right?

Religion: I'm a Deist. I'm also for a total separation of church and state.

Abstinence Only Education: I think every politician who didn't have sex until marriage should vote for it.

President Obama: Grading on a curve, meaning considering the colossal size of the sh** sandwich he was given, I think he's doing a great job.

Gays: Pro gay rights, plus Will & Grace is hilarious. Myself, I'm straight. I keep reminding people of that but the Army refuses to boot me out.

But mostly I think it proves the Libertarian concept that the "free market" always works itself out is completely horseshit. It's absolutely insane that we're drilling holes miles below the surface and we don't even have the technology to stop a leak.

BUT, until we progress to other energy sources on a large scale we're stuck drilling for oil. There's really no choice in the matter. But before you start messing with the ocean floor you had better have your ducks in a row, and for decades the government has been remiss in its duties.

Corporations, including BP are not inherently evil. Their entire purpose is to make money and maximize profits, and sometimes that is at the expense of others. On the flip side they also play an extremely vital role to society. You can actually compare them to fire. Let it run unhindered and fire can cause mass destruction and death. Fire isn't evil it's just doing what fire naturally does. BUT, regulate and control fire and it plays many helpful roles to society. This is where the government failed, it let the fire run amuck.

I have a great respect for Markos (the founder) and most of the members there. But two things drove me away.

1: Incessant, irrational Obama bashing happening en mass and the infighting it's causing.

2: A loud and persistent minority who post disparaging remarks about military service and do so with impunity. Some of them even make blatant, hateful remarks. The last straw was when an anti-military diary made the rec list on memorial day. The irony is the founder of Dailykos is a proud former US Army MLRS operator.

As an atheist, I'm kind of torn between Christopher Hitchens' view that we should be weakening Islam by force and the more pragmatic ideal that we can never force change upon the Middle East at gun-point. I tend to lean towards persuasion over force myself, although thats admittedly tough when the Islamic world is so closed to outside ideas.

Regardless, I think I speak for most people here when I say that I hope our military's efforts in the Middle East end up making things better, and not worse over the long-haul. Only time will tell.

I'm for using military force to stop attrocities in some cases, or to defend an ally.

Some people suggest the military should only be used for self defense, and that's certainly reasonable. But hypothetically if someone attacked, say, Canada without provocation - would you still be against military intervention? What if we can use military force to stop a genocide with minimal cost to ourselves?

That's not to say I agree with every military action the US has ever taken. There are some I disagree with, and there are some cases where I feel the US should have intervened but didn't.

Well-regulated capitalism is not really possible. Who is going to regulate it? It controls the state. What's not privatized exists to fund the private sector: Blackwater XE, Halliburton, BP (which provides 80% of oil to the military), privatization of universities and now K-12, privatization of even "public" television and radio. Something to think about!

It's not perfect, but we do have minimum wage, workers rights, consumer protections, health and safety standards, and many other forms of government regulations. Your point is valid that corporations can and do influence government, but having some infuence does negate the fact that we're a capitalist society with many government regulations.

Thai Kitty - Tastes Like Chicken!

1 lb of free range cat (kittens yield a more tender meat)
peanut butter
hot sauce
fresh ginger
fresh garlic
peanut oil

Start with a pound of boneless, skinless free range cat cut into cubes approximately the size of dice.
Pre-heat your skillet on high heat and add enough peanut oil to cover the bottom lightly.
Add the "kitty" cubes and cook until sides are browned and any juice produced has just evaporated away. Stir occasionally but not too often as you want to brown the meat.
Turn off the heat, stir the meat one last time and leave the meat in the pan.
In a small bowl, add 4 tablespoons of peanut butter (smooth or creamy) add a teaspoon of Red Hot Sauce or the hot sauce of your choice. Grate in a teaspoon of fresh ginger and add a smashed and finely chopped garlic clove. Blend the ingredients together with vigorous movements of a fork.
Add the peanut butter mixture to the still hot feline and stir to spread the flavor thoroughly.

I would urge you to keep in mind that alcohol is a "hard" drug, in fact it's one of the very few drugs that can kill you from the withdrawal symptoms if you quit cold turkey.

Funny thing happened to me at Ft Bragg I had an 82nd trooper to my left and a Army Ranger to my right in my quarters on Castle drive. Guess who was gone from home the longest this here REMF spent only 11 months home out of 25 months at Bragg actually I was gone twice the amount of time as my neighbors.
