Oil spill shows danger of weak government

Even the most ardent advocates of smaller government and the virtues of free enterprise better take a lesson from the Deepwater Horizon spill, and other disasters related to the extraction of fossil fuels from the earth.

If we're going to engage in this dangerous business - and we are, never mind the setbacks, because our lives demand energy in copious amounts - we need to do it right.

Private industry has proven that, while it can do many things brilliantly, including the creation of wealth, jobs, comfort and great personal freedom, it cannot police itself with lives and the environment at stake.

It's the same kind of lesson we have learned so painfully about the financial industry.

1. One very important positive action President Obama can take is to order BP to stop the

2. Absolutely . . . now corporations have the brightest and largest number of lawyers . . .

and the money to fight --

Tonight on C-span was watching a Hearing . . . Rep. Scott? -- hopefull I'll find it

again tomorrow . . . but seems that one of the reasons we haven't been prosecuting

some of this stuff from the past is there hasn't been enough money to do it????

3. Private industry does not create great personal freedom...

As often as not, private industry utilizes slave labor or near slave labor. They all engage in practices to reduce labor costs in order to boost profits, even to the point where their own workers can not afford the goods they make. If freedom is limied to the owners and investors in industry, it isn't freedom.

Freedoms are only guaranteed by governments and court systems designed to serve the people.
