AP: Mo. candidates disagree on 'don't ask, don't tell' (Carnahan comes out for DADT repeal)

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Democrat Robin Carnahan said Tuesday it's time for gays to be allowed to openly serve in the military. Her leading opponent in Missouri's U.S. Senate race, Republican Roy Blunt, disagrees.

Carnahan, the secretary of state, and Blunt, a congressman, staked opposite positions on whether Congress should repeal the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. A vote could come this week in the U.S. House.

Some Democrats have been pushing to repeal the 1993 law, which bars the military from asking whether service members are gay but requires that gay troops not discuss their sexual orientation.

"Excluding qualified men and women willing and able to serve their country just doesn't make a lot of sense," Carnahan said, citing several current and former military leaders who believe it's time to drop the law.
