Struggles of immigrating the "right way" (hockey player possibly being deported)
Edited on Wed May-26-10 03:10 PM by MountainLaurel
This is why most people have no respect for USCIS.

Tyson Nash, a former pro hockey player and current radio analyst for the Phoenix Coyotes, believes in doing things the right way.

He moved from Canada to the United States 15 years ago, when he was 20, in order to fulfill his dream of a sports career. He was not the biggest or the most talented hockey player, but he managed through grit and determination to play professionally into his 30s, including a stint with the Coyotes.

'This country has given me what I have," he told me. "I am very grateful to be here."

In 2001, Nash began the process to become a permanent resident of the U.S., to get what is commonly called a "green card."

1. The USCIS is a bureaucratic nightmare
I've dealt with other Government agencies and never seen the red tape that makes up the USCIS. Applications are rejected, the applicant is not only not told why he isn't allowed to find out who rejected him. The entire system is designed to put up barriers and hoops that must be jumped through in just the right way at just the right time. The word "service" in their name is probably correctly termed false advertising at the very least.

Since they were rolled into the gothic maze that is the Department of Homeland Security it's not gotten any better.

This is one, of probably several, Government organizations that would benefit from a deep cleaning. I'd like to see it completely modernized but I don't think it will ever happen. There are far too many bureaucrats that have a nice cushy job there and they don't want to learn anything new.
