GM recalls 162,000 Hummers over hood fault...
http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5hHfJQrTEpFWhg6PWEBZVGo7Pk-Lg

US car giant General Motors is recalling more than 160,000 Hummers over a flaw that could cause part of the hood to break off while the vehicle is being driven, the company said Wednesday.

The problem could affect up to 162,129 Hummer H3 cars made between 2006 and 2010, according to documents from GM and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"Some of these vehicles have a condition in which the integral clip-tabs on the hood louver may fracture," GM said. "If this indicator is unnoticed, additional clips could fracture and the hood louver could detach from the vehicle.

"If the vehicle is being driven when this occurs, it could strike a following vehicle and cause injury and/or property damage," the company said.

3. They should do with these Hummers what they did with the GM EV1 electric car...
Round em up, and crush em.

Crush em good.

17. for those who are a bit "automotive knowledge impaired"...
the recalled car is a Hummer H3. It's simply the mid-sized General Motors SUV platform with "Hummer-ish" plastic body panels attached.

It's 14city/18hwy rating is identical to the popular Dodge Dakota mid-sized SUV.

and it's curb weight of 4695lbs is LESS or similar to that of these popular vehicles:

Porsche Cayenne (4950)
Honda Pilot (4559)
GMC Yukon (5677)
Toyota Land Cruiser (5688)
Toyota Sequoia (5090)
Mercedes ML500 (4752)
BMW X5 (4898)

The HUMMER brand has simply been a scam. The original H1 is simply a tractor, a military tractor made legal for the street for the likes of Arnold. The H2 is simply a GMC Yukon/Chevrolet Tahoe with H1 copy-cat bodywork. And the H3 is the mid-size SUV with the plastic body parts...

5. The fix is to glue the fake plastic non-functional hood louver to the hood
Wouldn't it be eaier to just rip it off and throw it away?

6. We need a hummer tax.
If you drive a hummer, you have to pay a dollar more for gas.
You have to pay a $2,500-5,000 tax because you're polluting the air and the money would be used for public transportation in your area OR to pay for asthma meds for people who need help paying for asthma meds.

They are no worse than other large SUVs, including the Toyota Sequoia

16. It's not exactly hard to hate Hummers.
Yes, there are other gigantic SUVs, but the fact is that those other companies make other cars that are very energy efficient. Ford's Focus, Toyota's Prius (despite its recent difficulties), etc. Hummer literally does nothing but make giant, gas-guzzling penis extensions.

21. I'll include them too. I saw a lady driving one yesterday. I can't stand seeing huge SUVs
Edited on Wed May-26-10 12:54 PM by SocialistLez
with just one person in them.

Reminds me of Madagascar where one of the animals what an SUV was and one of the animals quipped they're huge vehicles normally seen with just one passenger.

I can understand having one if you haul a lot of stuff or have a huge family (not that I like those either but oh well) but most of the time I see only one person in it.

25. Because we (US Taxpayers) already bought most of them.
They are a prominent symbol of the destruction of our economy by the parasites.

100% deduction ($70K raised to $100K) that only applies to vehicles weighing (IIRC) 8,00lbs. Only a handful of the very largest American behemoths qualified, the Hummer is the reason for this giveaway, a gift to GM from the reich-wing of both parties.

None of the Japanese trucks were heavy enough to qualify (which is exactly why the weight number was picked in the first place)

Plus, it's an extra-shitty pile of garbage that can't even do what it's supposed to look like it can do.

26. What are you talking about?
What does this have to do with "the destruction of our economy?"

What does this have to do with the environmental impact of Toyota's large SUVs?

Seriously...some people will say anything to give Toyota a pass.

28. The question you asked. "Why just Hummer?"
Because the Hummers make up the overwhelming majority of the qualifying vehicles. Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Mercedes, Volvo, VW, etc., don't make consumer vehicles that qualify for the deduction. The people that buy them, pay for them.

Taxpayers paid for most of the land-barges.

If your beef is the lack of standards, I suggest you look at the MI delegation for an answer, they are the ones that have halted and obstructed all progress for the last half century.

29. You really need to read comments more carefully
I asked "Why only Hummers" to a person that said we should tax Hummers because those vehicles are "polluting the air." That's why I pointed out that other large SUVs pollute just as much as Hummers and asked "Why only Hummers."

32. Newsflash; the internets are anonymous and I have no face to save.
You seem to feel that the symbolism of the Hummer is irrelevant, and you are wrong.

Have you ever wondered why Noam Chomsky is a linguist? Language/symbolism define our thoughts and therefore define us.

18. you DO know that the H2 and H3 are simply
full sized and mid sized General Motors platforms with plastic body panels that "look" like a Hummer H1?

Condemn a Hummer H2/3 and you must also condemn ALL the same vehicles in the category including Toyota Sequoia, Honda Pilot and Dodge Dakota...

27. The fact that they've sold 162,000 of them confirms there's a sucker born every minute
I like running circles around Hummers on outdoor courses in my Jeep Wrangler that I paid about 1/3 of the price for. As has been mentioned throughout the thread, the H2/H3 are just "militarized" versions of other companies large and medium sized SUVs.

Over/Under on when GM launches the Hummer Crossover? It'll be the miliarized version of the SUV-for-people-who-cant-drvie-SUVs!
