Rand Paul's Libertarian La-La Land

Not so fast, everybody. Rand Paul can't abruptly disavow the extremist views on civil rights that he's been espousing for years and expect us all to just move along. Was he lying then? Is he lying now? Or has the Tea Party movement's newly crowned Mad Hatter changed his mind?

1. Rand Paul had a rude awakening. The textbook Libertarian utopia is completely unelectable.

All conservatives can do is protest that he doesn't really mean it.

Private rebuke and ostracization cannot possibly have anywhere near the same power to break the back of segregation as the Civil Rights Act did.

2. Well, Rachel did a piece on Somalia tonight, a Libertarian paradise

that even Rand Paul couldn't like.

5. Someone once told me, Libertarianism is a great idea, if everyone were angels....

...the fact that a grown adult like Paul still hangs on to fantasy, should be a wake-up call to Kentuckians everywhere.

Provided there was a nice big empty continent about the size of Australia that all Libertarians could emigrate to. Then they could try their Utopian ideals in the real world, and see just how long it lasted.

Before the first big corporations ignored their courts, hired their own private armies, and then told their government to go fuck off. Then their government, what little of it there was, would be faced with a real dilemma, let their people become slaves to big corporations, or interfere in the big corporations "business". Their idealism would run into cold, hard reality, just like Paul did, and they would find their dreams shattered.

9. Libertarians

have this basic problem with a failure to understand that a free people invented government, quite on purpose. If government was removed tomorrow, people would immediately start to re-invent it.

Libertarian faith in individual freedoms lasts just about exactly as long as it takes your neighbor to do something you really do not like. This is how laws are born, and government agencies are then created to enforce them. The people demand government, I hear from them everyday.

Some folks profess to like the concept of anarchy. Very few like the reality of the experience.
