Document Says Oil Chiefs Met With Cheney Task Force

By Dana Milbank and Justin Blum
Washington Post Staff Writers
Wednesday, November 16, 2005

A White House document shows that executives from big oil companies met with Vice President Cheney's energy task force in 2001 -- something long suspected by environmentalists but denied as recently as last week by industry officials testifying before Congress.

The document, obtained this week by The Washington Post, shows that officials from Exxon Mobil Corp., Conoco (before its merger with Phillips), Shell Oil Co. and BP America Inc. met in the White House complex with the Cheney aides who were developing a national energy policy, parts of which became law and parts of which are still being debated.

In a joint hearing last week of the Senate Energy and Commerce committees, the chief executives of Exxon Mobil Corp., Chevron Corp. and ConocoPhillips said their firms did not participate in the 2001 task force. The president of Shell Oil said his company did not participate "to my knowledge," and the chief of BP America Inc. said he did not know.

Chevron was not named in the White House document, but the Government Accountability Office has found that Chevron was one of several companies that "gave detailed energy policy recommendations" to the task force. In addition, Cheney had a separate meeting with John Browne, BP's chief executive, according to a person familiar with the task force's work; that meeting is not noted in the document.

He knows very well if he did or did not. And because he needs to use the "I'm a dumbass" defense, my guess is he most certainly DID meet with Darth Cheney.

15. Cheney and Rove taught them how...
Just say you don't remember, even if you made notes on the edge of a newspaper page and it was brought out as evidence...just say, "I don't remember" and that is sufficient. Oh, and as in Cheney's case, smirk as you say it.

In my humble opinion, KKK Rove didn't lose all that weight during the Plame investigation because he knew he was innocent.

Everything they did was memorable to me. I'll never forget how much they sucked and the damage they've done.

11. Yeah. And the energy "summit" behind closed doors
and in secrecy STILL chaps my butt. I've been hollering about that ever since it happened and will CONTINUE to do so UNTIL WE KNOW WHAT WENT ON.

It's a total fucking SHAME that a meeting of that much importance was held in secret and it's even MORE of a shame that we STILL don't know what went on.

16. Yes, and this is just round one, so they're trying that first for all of those who will now
be able to go back to their districts and tell the voters whatever makes it easier for BP. Also, for all of their fluffers out there, singing the talking points to the somnolent.

This guy is either a lying bastard or one of the most demented CEOs in the oil business if he can't remember meeting with the Vice President. Or maybe he met with Cheney so many times planning their strategy for bilking the citizens and enriching themselves that he is unable to recall that one particular meeting among the scores of meetings.

30. How can you 'forget' meeting with the Vice President of the U.S.?
And especially in a "secret meeting" whose confidentiality was fought for all the way to the Supreme Court?

You'd think those kind of things would tend to stick in one's memory when you're making deals worth $Billions.

Liar.
