State officials say they won't wait for approval to build sand barriers
By The Associated Press
May 23, 2010, 4:20PM

<snip>

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal says the state is not waiting for federal approval to begin building sand barriers to protect the coastline from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Jindal's defiant comments Sunday came as oil pushed at least 12 miles into the heart of Louisiana's marshes. Two major pelican rookeries are now awash in crude.

Jindal made his remarks on a boat at the edge of one of the pelican nesting grounds in Barataria Bay. He and officials from several coastal parishes say the berms would close the door on the oil still pouring from a deepwater gusher about 50 miles off the coast.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is studying the environmental impacts from the emergency barrier proposal. The Corps didn't immediately respond to e-mails and telephone messages.

1. Thank God, somebody with balls!
Obama's too worried he'd be called a dictator if he stepped in.

8. I know! I don't understand crap like this - these aren't "normal"
times - this is an emergency. Fuck the study, get those barriers out there.

They couldn't be any more destructive than the oil itself! :grr:

16. They don't know what the environmental impact will be if the barrier is built...
Edited on Sun May-23-10 07:16 PM by Buns_of_Fire
Got news for you, guys: We're pretty damned sure what the environmental impact will be if the barrier ISN'T built!

The typical "We're going to appoint a commission next month to study the ramifications; we will publish a report from them no later than mid-October" BS. Geez. Hasn't the Corps of Engineers embarrassed themselves enough already?

Screw that. You go, Bobby! (I can't believe I just said that.)

5. I have to applaud him on this and
cry a little bit that he will give Republicans credibility again, not a good thing. However, this disaster should not be politicized. Everyone needs to step up to the plate and do the right thing even if it flies in the face of what our corporate held hostage federal government wants.

13. Obama could have preempted this by declaring an emergency and ordering a waiver

10. Amazing how Gov No-Volcano-Monitoring jumps in when it is on his own shores.
Do I think the GOP will learn from this? Nope.

Good for you, Bobby Jindal. I only ask that you remember this.

14. Sometimes it's easier
to ask forgiveness than get permission.

Gotta hand it to him. He's got the stones to actually ***DO*** something. Unllike the sorry Washington bastards.

Once again you can color me unimpressed with the Obama administration. They have not been proactive during this catastrophe and they have not pushed for anything resembling tansparency.

17. Actually, he is asserting state's rights here
Or more accurately, state's powers, "powers" being the actual word in the 10th amendment.
