Sites caught sharing secret data with advertisers, report says
Edited on Sun May-23-10 07:06 AM by RKP5637
(ArsTechnica) -- "The privacy issues that have been hounding Facebook may be coming to a head.

A report in the Wall Street Journal indicates that Facebook, along with MySpace, Digg and a handful of other social-networking sites, have been sharing users' personal data with advertisers without users' knowledge or consent.

The data shared includes names, user IDs, and other information sufficient to enable ad companies such as the Google-owned DoubleClick to identify distinct user profiles. Some of the sites in question, including MySpace and Facebook, stopped sharing the data after the Journal asked them about it. ..."

1. I have a long list of reasons why I don't do Social Networking.

This is only one.

And I delete cookies and history often.

I find CCleaner {Click} very useful.

2. Yep, same here. I don't use them either. They have really violated any sense of trust I ever had
with them. I only use session cookies, clear all on close, etc., etc. Too bad the Social Networking sites have violated trust... I get so tired of exploitation, lies and untrustworthiness which just seems to be the norm anymore...

3. My Facebook profile is not exactly accurate.
The things I felt they didn't need to know were intentionally filled with bogus data.

5. A few years ago I signed up to classmates(dot)com

Not long after that I started being deluged with spam. I changed my email addy in my classmates profile to a bogus one. The spam trickled down to nothing after a while and I don't even go to that lame site any more.
