Prom queen in a dress? Not this guy this night
Prom queen in a dress? Not this guy this night
Flanagan High School senior Omar Bonilla went from prom queen hopeful to not being able to go to prom at all. The school says he brought that punishment on himself.

After coming out of the closet this, his senior year at Flanagan High, Omar Bonilla decided to take it a step further: run for prom queen.

He almost won -- Bonilla was among the top three vote-getters -- but in the past few days, it all unraveled.

Fearful that other students would try to beat up a prom-goer in drag, the school administration asked him to wear a tuxedo to Friday night's dance. And after two meetings with the school principal to plead for the right to wear a dress, Bonilla was slapped with a two-day suspension, the timing of which meant he couldn't go to the prom at all.

As students were racing off to prom, Bonilla was putting on his blue sequin dress -- but only to pose for a Miami Herald photographer.

....

Drew confirmed that administrators were worried about safety.

...

The suspension, said Drew, the spokeswoman, was solely because Bonilla had ignored security personnel after parking in the wrong place. Bonilla said he was in a daze that morning and he didn't hear the security guards.

And I am a woman! Oh well, at least he got to show off the outfit and makeup.

30. Went to see a live female impersonation show one time
back in the 1970s.

The guys were gorgeous.

One of my favorite movies is "To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar"

Patrick Swayze is amazing. He looks fabulous dressed as a woman, and I always smile, wishing s/he could be my big sister.

Ironically, I also look at all of the guys dressed as women and think, geez...they actually look more feminine (mannerisms, the way they walk) than I do...

31. Oh, I love that movie!
Though it does make me feel inadequate as a woman. But then I remember Mr. csziggy married me because I was strong, not because of my looks. He's weird that way.

4. It sounds like they strung him along until the last minute
Then pulled the "suspend the troublemaker so that is the reason he is not allowed at the prom" ploy. After all, I am sure they are familiar with the lesbian who 'caused all that trouble" and how her school had to fake her out to keep her from attending the real prom in a tuxedo.

Why can't these idiots deal with the changes in our society and let people be who they really are? Neither one of these kids wants to be exhibitionists or troublemakers. They both wanted to dress in the clothes that more fit their self image and have a good time. The haters cannot handle this so they have to shut them down.

11. Yeah, you are absolutely correct, and a country that just for good measure
keeps enough kill power on hand to kill every living thing on earth several times, you know, just to be sure we got 'em all. Compliance through death.

25. Yeah, isn't that the truth, the ones that insist the US is a Christian nation throw
in a good measure of hatred, bigotry and bullying, and sprinkle in hypocrisy for good measure.

12. I'm beginning to think that too.
As a fellow Queen, my heart goes out to that young beauty.

I am so sick and tired of the hatred and bigotry I see every day.

We are a nation that is so mentally ill and fearful, there are days where I ask myself why i bother to stay.

I am at least thankful I live in a city that is relatively safe for someone like me.

On the upside, I want that dress.

She has great taste. :)

19. Yep, it's a very very strange country, same here, "I am so sick and tired of the hatred and
bigotry I see every day." And it cuts across all walks of life. I am so damn tired of those in this country that think they are so F'en perfect in every way and cast judgment on everyone else. Glad you are in a safe city.

21. You know what makes me sick?
Aside from the haters, that is.

I am a woman and I never looked that good! But then, it was never important to me and I got flak for not making beauty a priority.

Care to share it with the class?

If you're laughing at this for the wrong reasons, I hope you are prepared to get a lesson in how bigotry is viewed on this Board.

17. Yeah, you posted as I was typing...
My mother is a lesbian and my godfather is gay. Homophobia is one of those things that gets this gal close to physical violence (I'm pretty mellow otherwise). I refused to go to a Westboro Baptist counterprotest, because since it was held on the college campus where I'm a grad student and TA, I was afraid to get arrested for punching someone in the head and then I might've lost my funding.

Let's see the explanation before I go any more bananas.

I find all of the bullying, hatred and bigotry flying around this country revolting. It is so damn sick and indicative of a very sick society.

24. We're becoming a repressed version of Rome.
It is sickening and it needs to stop.

I fail to see what is so threatening about ANYONE whose only crime is being different from "accepted mainstream" paradigms, whatever the fuck that means.

We all bleed the same color.

We're all human beings.

Why can we not CO-EXIST?

I don't even know why I bother anymore.

26. Never stop bothering, and not that I think you would... but if we all stop
bothering then all is really lost.

IMO the Bush era invigorated a lot of hatred in the country, that it was OK to hate and the MSM really started amplifying it to increase ratings, AKA Fox News and similar, Beck, Limbaugh and all...

I have a bit of advice for you, friend.

If you think discrimination is funny.....

You're in the WRONG House.

Since you don't have the courage or the guts to explain your case of the giggles, I guess we can assume you're an unwelcome visitor.

And I would respectfully ask you, if that is the case, TO GET THE FUCK OF OUR LAWN.

Just communicating in a language you most likely understand. :)
