Another reason (besides politics) to stay out of Oklahoma.

When an Okie sees hail, he knows that a tornado is possible/probable. At the 2 minute mark, it gets really hairy.

Edit to add link. Doh!

2. I know some smart people who have stayed in Oklahoma.
Most of them left.

My friend Jimmy Goodman, who is a graduate of Stanford Law (not exactly the Close Cover Before Striking Trade School of Underwater Basketweaving) and the president of the oldest and largest law firm in Oklahoma, says:

"Being a liberal in Oklahoma sucks!!"

Truer words were never spoken.

Also read up on Frosty Troy. Molly Ivins wrote about him. He refers to "The Daily Oklahoman" as "The Daily Disappointment".

7. I know some very fine liberals in Oklahoma.
According to them, they are rare, but in my estimation they are true gems.

4. It's dramatic because of the pool
Otherwise, it's no bigger a hail storm than those I've seen before.

6. I like it because it shows the velocity of the hail
for some reason I don't get the same impression of how much force is in a hail storm, or perspective of the size of the hail when it bounces off grass.

9. That is true
Grass isn't very bouncy.

Don't get me wrong. Hail storms are scary even in field of knee-high grass and wild flowers - especially in a field because there's no cover. Six years ago we had a hail storm in the TX Panhandle that resulted in nearly $100 million dollars in damage.

I think the brouhaha around this particular OK storm is the product of instant media combined with the availability of digital home-video cameras.

10. You're probably right.
A lot of people don't understand how well prepared people who live in tornado country are to cope with this type of weather. I received the link from a friend in Oklahoma and she thought it was terrifying. These days anyone can pass themselves off as a reporter--even the ones who have nothing to report but, "Omigawd, omigawd!"

11. There was no rotation in that storm, so there wasn't a tornado danger.
I was lucky, my car was in the garage. Lots of my fellow librarians had major damage to their cars and homes.

However, I agree, don't live in Oklahoma if you are afraid of thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes.

12. Wasn't it Will Rogers who said of Oklahoma, "If you don't like the weather
in Oklahoma, wait a minute?" My nephew in Edmond had major damage to his pickup parked in the driveway. Where I live we had our first tornado ever a few years ago. It was a 0 but picked up to a 1+ before it lifted. People were amazed at the amount of damage. The tree by my six-story apartment building here is a six and a half story oak. I have never seen a tree this size in Oklahoma. The climate patterns in this area have been downright wiggy for the past decade so now we are seeing more wind shear activity, hail is not so rare, all but one of our big snows this winter came up from the South.
