Girl Sticks Head Out Bus Window, Hit By Tree
Girl Sticks Head Out Bus Window, Hit By Tree
11-Year-Old Killed By Impact

DETROIT -- An 11-year-old girl died Thursday after police said she stuck her head out a school bus window as it was pulling away and was struck by a tree branch, Detroit TV station WDIV reported.

Police said the girl, a fifth-grade student, was waving goodbye to a friend when the bus turned to pull out of the lot and she was hit in the head.

She was rushed to Children's Hospital, where she later died.

Students at the school said the girl had been on the bus with her 9-year-old sister.

1. And that's why we always keep our heads inside the bus.

2. When I was a kid, I had a recurring nightmare about sticking my head out a car window
and getting it chopped off. This is just a tragedy.

8. I had the same nightmare
then when I was doing fieldwork in India I was riding a bus down a narrow, tree-lined road. None of the buses there have windows, so the branches would pull back as the bus pushed through them then finally snap back, in through the open windows, with great velocity. It was terrifying, prolly cuz of the childhood nightmares, and painful as hell.

But this. This is just horrible.

3. How tragic.
Very sad.

One day my daughter was late coming home from school. Turned out a friend was hit in the face by a branch that came into the bus as it was turning. The girl needed to have several stitches.

9. Awful.
I remember them warning us to keep our limbs and heads in the bus.

It's no urban legend.

11. There was a similar accident in Indianapolis a couple years ago...
This student was killed instantly as their head smashed into a street sign.

It seems to me that school buses could be outfitted with heavy screens, or even bars. The windows' ability to be lowered to a only certain level hasn't seemed to help keep heads and limbs inside.

12. In 1968 the same thing happened to a HS friend of mine. Not a school bus, a private vehicle ..
but he leaned out, and banged his head against a tree at around 40 mph. Tragic.

13. I seem to remember school buses having windows
that wouldn't open enough to get your head through. That would have been back in the 70s.

23. How do you know?
Really, you're assuming the worst of the family. Maybe they have just accepted that this was a tragic accident that happened because their child didn't do what all kids are always told to do when riding in vehicles.

The fact that we live in a litigous society doesn't give you the right to assume the worst about a family of which you know nothing.

24. An ambulance chaser is someone who pursues the clients
But, demonize away. And see who you call when a family member is wrongfully killed.

26. She would only be considered "wrongfully killed" if she had lost her hear while
SITTING DOWN IN HER SEAT like kids on buses are supposed to. The one who did something wrong is HER.

It's really sad what happened, but it is not anyone else's fault. Except, perhaps, the parents, who may not have taught her to follow silly rules like sitting down on a bus.

I am basing this on the assumption that she had to be standing up to put her head out the bus window.

18. That was my thought too. . . Funny when you hear someone hit
a deer with their car, when most times it's the deer that hit the car. I don't know of anyone who goes out of their way to actually hit a deer.

20. Same Thing Happened In Front of Me...
Edited on Thu May-20-10 05:47 PM by winstars

In 1972 in front of junior high school in Staten Island. My friend Nunzio apparently had his head out the window talking to someone as the bus pulled away. he struck his head against a telephone pole and was basically killed instantly. I was in the front of the crowded bus and thank God I did not see it actually happen but it was a most horrific scene with screaming and crying. He was the first of our friends to go and a real growing up moment for all of us. My heart goes out to the kids in this current story and am somewhat surprised at the amount of other people like myself who have similar experiences.

KEEP YOUR HEAD INSIDE THE WINDOW, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sticking our heads out the bus window--and here it actually happens. Sad.

this is a horrible story, as are the similar ones posted in the thread below it. I am going to remind my kids once again to keep their body parts inside the vehicle. Ugh.
