What happens is that they buy ad space from google, and then google places their ads where they think it is relevent, where there is a whole lot of discussion about Arlen Spector for example. This is why you'll see ads for mccain, and why you will see ads for sarah palins book when it comes out on DU, because we're talking about it.

That's how ads usually work. They are paid for by the person they promote.

Ads are revenue and revenue pays site expenses.

Google ads use keywords to direct particular ads to particular sites, so it's no mystery that Specter ads would show up on DU, since his name is definitely going to come up here.
