President Obama today signed the Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Act, a measure that gives the federal government an oversight role in tracking international press freedom issues. The pool-only event went down in the Oval, where Obama was asked if he would entertain some questions -- specifically about BP.

"Speaking of press freedoms," ventured Chip Reid of CBS News.

"You're certainly free to ask the question," Obama said. "I won't be answering, I'm not doing a press conference today, but we'll be seeing you in the course of the week."

2. The president has no constitutional responsibility to answer questions from the media

Especially given how disrespectful and negative they are toward him.

And they should be grateful that the president has graciously signed this law (which is something he also had no obligation to do) which will further promote press freedom.

They could start showing a little appreciation. Then perhaps we can talk about the president answering some of their questions.

Press freedom is not the same thing as press access. You can print or air anything you like, or ask any questions you wish to ask. The president has no obligation to answer you or give you red carpet access. He may also pick and choose which questions are answered and which questions are ignored.

With the First Amendment Zones, the canned questions, the pre-selected questioners, and the cutting off of photo ops and press availabilities because "lunch is waiting." Suck it, Freepers.

If President Obama had taken questions, you can bet they'd be squawking about how he turned the Daniel Pearl deal into something all about him, him, him. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. Their "outrage" is so manufactured, it should have "Made in China" stamped on it.
