Transgender conservative Republican takes on Wasserman Schultz
Posted on Sunday, 05.16.10

Donna Milo -- a Cuban-American, conservative Republican, transgender woman running for Congress -- says she doesn't like labels.

``I'm an American. I make my way on the basis of ability. My triumphs are based on my abilities, not on a label or a crutch,'' said Milo, a Miami Planning Advisory Board member running to replace Broward-based U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, one of the House's most liberal Democrats.

Milo, 48, will speak Monday night at Fort Lauderdale City Hall, a guest at the monthly Sunshine Republicans club, a conservative group of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender South Floridians.

``Donna is a very unique individual,'' Sunshine Republicans President Benjamin Lewis said. ``She brings a story with her candidacy. The story is of overcoming obstacles and desires to become the person she has wanted to be.''

11. Define transgender
Edited on Sun May-16-10 10:51 PM by Ter
I deeply apologize for any ignorance, but I don't know. Is it a male who took estrogen and/or had breast implants who dresses/looks like a woman, or someone born with a penis and a vagina? Or can it be either of these scenarios? Also, is transgender the same thing as transvestite?

I do know that if someone has a sex change, that person is not considered transgender.

The dichotomy should be made between transsexual and transgender... where the distinction levers on identity as defined by biology or psychology/sociology/culture perhaps...

Sex is primarily a biological term in this regard... (perhaps not in others)... So a Transsexual is someone who has undergone some sort of sex change by medical procedure.

Gender represents all of the identity traits that hinge on sex, but are not biological -- eg. girls wear dresses, guys are loud and never wear pink, etc-- other examples like that. Transgender might be a cross dresser,
but does not necessarily mean someone who has undergone a medical sex change...

This is a reduction of course, but this is my moderately informed understanding of the difference. Trans-vestite is limited to dress only... Where some transgender individuals might be considered so, because they "act" like the other sex as well.
I've know a few transvestites who are not very good at passing, because their walk, actions or demeanor aren't convincing at all...

You might also consider that there might be situations where a Transsexual chooses to continue dressing and acting like their former sex... eg a man who is operated on and becomes a woman in the sexual biological senses, but still dresses like a man to hide the operation, or identifies as masculine. Is perhaps a cross-dressing female. They might not be considered transgender, although the question is certainly open for debate or self definition. Most Identity political positions are subject to the individuals perspective.

On edit, I looked it up on Wikipedia... and my definition is very simplified, but loosely supported by the post... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transgender

34. Probably not PC to refer to the candidate as "it"
When there is confusion about whether the person is male or female, I would just refer to the person by their name. Calling folks who bridge and/or defy gender boundaries as "it" is considered a pejorative.

And also a Repuke. I told her that if it were up to the Repukes her operation would NEVER had taken place. I just don't understand how anyone can vote for the party that would rather see them dead.

Read this link - it will answer your questions better than I can.

http://www.apa.org/topics/sexuality/transgender.aspx

"Transsexuals are transgender people who live or wish to live full time as members of the gender opposite to their birth sex. Biological females who wish to live and be recognized as men are called female-to-male (FTM) transsexuals or transsexual men. Biological males who wish to live and be recognized as women are called male-to-female (MTF) transsexuals or transsexual women. Transsexuals usually seek medical interventions, such as hormones and surgery, to make their bodies as congruent as possible with their preferred gender. The process of transitioning from one gender to the other is called sex reassignment or gender reassignment."

22. The writer makes it confusing...
Edited on Mon May-17-10 12:14 AM by heliarc
because when he says she is a woman it is unclear if the journalist is paying respect to a man's wish to be considered a woman, or if she is sexually female and "transgender" refers to her desire to be/act as a man.

Then later in the article it becomes clear that a surgery made him a her, and it wasn't just a persona.

No matter. It's going to confuse the hell out of the Republicans in her district too, which is the important part about dealing with any and all gusanos in South Florida.

30. hold tight to the very fire that is burning you - the GOP is the antithesis of her story

excuses come & excuses go, but the GOP is everything EXCEPT what her lifestory is about - so to join its ranks is a dumbing-down process that no one will be able to explain.

She can do as she pleases, but doesn't speak well about her sense of smarts and logic - something important in a candidate for government office.

31. I'm Sure Sarah Palin Would Love to give her some tips
I never understood how the Log Cabin Repulicant's could support the G(NO)P and it's even stranger that a transgender person could support the party that thinks they are the devil's spawn and should probably be stoned.

33. This is what is sad with the republican party....
Donna Milo could have the perfect conservative credential on paper but the fact that she is a transgender means that there is a large chunk of republicans that won't vote for her because she is transgender.

That has to be the saddest group meetings - that Sunshine club. I understand that for some members of the GLBT community it's all about the money but to support a party that will treat you like you are some sort of bad mistake that will rot in hell because of who you are - I can't even imagine why.
