2. Much sympathy also,
as my 18 year old nephew is currently at Ft. Hood and undoubtedly on his way to Iraq this summer.

11. Actually, Midnight clarified in another post - the nephew is alive.

 Thoughts are still with him, though - that had to have been a horribly traumatic experience.

14. Thank you for stated the correction here. I love you guys for
sending your care and thoughts to me. My beautiful newphew was a ballet dancer. He ran several miles a day. Kept his body in top shape. This is what I attribute to him suriving what I'm afraid boils down to water bording. I will get more details from my sister this summer. I told her I could not discuss details over phone. Our phone line has not been reliable/private for some time.

17. I'm really glad he survived
but that is a horrible way to be treated. :( Big hugs to your family - I'll be thinking about your nephew and sending good vibes to him, your sister, and you as well. Peace.

24. That was an issue at Pendleton when I was there, too
I'm angry to see it's still happening. There are two problems.

1. The outer ranges are full (and I mean full) of seasonal rivers that are poorly marked, if it all, on the maps and very prone to flash floods. The attitude of the training instructors is that "it's fine to get them muddy", which in itself is true, but safety doctrine on flash floods is clear and when I was there it was routinely disregarded at the cost of several incidents like this. Obviously I can't speak to the particulars of this case without the facts but it's troubling.

2. This miscommunication (if that's what happened) has happened before too -- somebody falls in, comes out not breathing, and gets radio'd in as a casualty before first aid is exhausted. But the lines of communication are so tangled (the training battalion has three different reporting lines) that the word got sent to the family that the Marine was dead when by that time he had been resuscitated for hours. One of the Marines' mothers found out he was alive when he called her that night on his buddy's cell phone.

This could just be an isolated incident but if it's a continuation of the pattern that was happening 5 years ago that's really troubling.

18. Breeze54 I forgot to add he was resuscitated. My sister said they
drowned him. So technically you could say he was killed. He was left in the water floating face down. So sorry that my post was posted without clarifying. I love you guys for caring so much. It is my hope that my sweet nephew who is marring in a few weeks comes back to his new wife. My sister is doing her best to move through this moment in time that seems like a horrible betrayal.

She posted a retraction an hour or so ago.
