If trend continues, 2010 will produce more jobs than ALL EIGHT YEARS of Bush-Cheney
POLITICAL CONNECTIONS
Repairing The Job Machine
More jobs might be created this year than during George W. Bush's presidency.

by Ronald Brownstein

Saturday, May 15, 2010

If the economy produces jobs over the next eight months at the same pace as it did over the past four months, the nation will have created more jobs in 2010 alone than it did over the entire eight years of George W. Bush's presidency.

That comparison comes with many footnotes and asterisks. But it shows how the economic debate between the parties could look very different over time -- perhaps by November, more likely by 2012. More important, the comparison underscores the urgency of repairing an American job-creation machine that was sputtering long before the 2008 financial meltdown.

First, the numbers: From February 2001, Bush's first full month in office, through January 2009, his last, total U.S. nonfarm employment grew from 132.5 million to 133.5 million, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That's an increase, obviously, of just 1 million. From January through April of this year, the economy created 573,000 jobs. Over a full year, that projects to 1.72 million jobs. Job-creation numbers are notoriously volatile, so the actual result could run above or below that estimate. But Obama administration economists are increasingly optimistic that job growth this year will exceed expectations. Few of them will be surprised if more jobs are created in 2010 than over Bush's two terms.

Now the principal footnote: To compare job growth in 2010 with Bush's record ignores the nearly 4 million jobs lost in Obama's first year, during the freefall that began in Bush's final months. That's like ignoring a meteor strike. Over time, voters are likely to judge Obama by his degree of success in eliminating that deficit and reducing unemployment. Still, if the economy this year produces more than 1 million jobs -- or, conceivably, more than 2 million -- that will give Democrats more ammunition to argue that their agenda has started to turn the tide.

8. Well, the jobs pay $7.50 per hour
so they can create 10 new jobs for the old union salary paid in 1976..

24. Isn't it insane?
Actually a UAW worker could earn about $65.oo per hour during that time.
That is why American unions own so little stock - how would want crappy stock when they are earning mad mad cash..

39. UAW workers were perhaps the most overpaid people on the planet
The good old days..
I read a book by a union lawyer - he was making less then the guys on the line..
Doctors, lawyers, engineers.. all were making about the same as a line worker..

I think the UAW workers earned up toward 70k.. still real good compared to the wages being paid today..

I was just pointing out that making 10 minimum wage jobs ain't that great of an accomplishment considering all the livable wage jobs that have been lost since OUTSOURCING.

So, it is OK to include Obama in those thanks.

I do take note that you have predicted ending the stimulation programs will lead to loss of those jobs. Nice crystal ball you used. I can't wait to see if it is accurate.

in the situation.

One little blip in April, and people go all apeshit.

If it is sustained, then great.

I hope we can grow our way out of this mess, but it appears that Obama is now just a puppet of the deficit terrorists. The consequences of their control will be dire for what's left of the middle class.

23. You gotta fight for your right to party
I'm a sole proprietor, a business owner, in the worst fucking economy since the great depression.

I continue to get new clients.

I have to work my fucking ass off for them, I work seven days a week, and I do not keep "office hours." When I'm awake, I'm on the clock.

The work IS OUT THERE.

The days of someone pulling a high paying job out of his or her ass just because they want one and are too fucking lazy to break a sweat looking for it are gone like a cool breeze, daddy-o.

You're right.

We can curl up into a ball and die, or not. If life isn't exactly what people want it to be, when they want it, then cry me a fucking river, and work harder.

"The harder I work, the luckier I get" - Samuel Goldwyn

...you may have seen the article positing whether the economy is growing too fast as part vendors can't increase production fast enough. We're currently suffering from this sudden increase in orders and lack of components to build to order.

43. Tom Delay agrees with you.

Crowley: People are unemployed because they want to be?

Delay: well, it is the truth. and people in the real world know it. And they have friends and they know it. Sure, we ought to be helping people that are unemployed find a job, but we also have budget considerations that are incredibly important, especially now that Obama is spending monies that we don't have.

25. Pretty much if you one of the millions in the next few months who will exhaust
all unemployment. No money for rent food, car, health care, ins, etc. That make it pretty immediate.

Certainly puts the deficit at the bottom of the list of concerns. Same place the elite in government put it when they sold the bailout. Funny how that works.

Now they run around yelling "OMG the deficit"

Maybe someone who thinks millions of people will now pay their bills using air would like to quote the living wage jobs created, you know jobs that will buy you a modest home, health care, a yearly vacation and the means to raise a child.

How many of those jobs has Obama created?

33. Even if it happens, the MSM gerbils will still whine that Dems will take a loss this election.
They'll give the teabaggers disproportionate coverage of their little orgies and make them look like it's a populist groundswell.

They'll focus on all of the retiring Democrats and ignore that the Republicans are losing more to retirement.

They'll blame Obama for the Gulf oil spill, the ongoing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Lindsay Lohan's drinking problem, the volcano eruptions in Iceland and anything else that comes to their feeble little minds.
