Well isn't this sweet? A republican just got out of prison and he is sorry
Taff goes on after a fall from grace
Now out of prison, the former GOP star faces his future remorseful, yet resolute.
By STEVE KRASKE
The Kansas City Star

Adam Taff is back.

Out of prison. At work again. Still married to the woman who walked down the aisle with him in 2004 when he was the prince of the Kansas Republican Party and the guy who nearly knocked off U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore two years before.

“I took what happened extremely hard,” he said in his first interview since being released from federal custody two weeks ago. “I was very disappointed that I would allow myself to get into that situation. It pained me beyond description knowing I had let down good people who believed in me.”

But dwelling on the past doesn’t get you very far, said Taff, 42.

“We all have difficulties in our lives, whether we bring them on ourselves or not. It’s our ability to learn from that and channel those in positive ways that is so important.”

<skip>

He knows exactly what he wants people to say about him 10 years from now.

“I hope they’ll say that I know him, that he has worked hard, and he has earned my respect and my trust,” he said. “And I want to be someone that people can say they’re proud to have as a neighbor and someone they’re proud to have in this community.”

more . . .

1. Great candidate for Presidential Medal of Freedom
This is an exemplar of Today's Republican. Once upon a time, long ago in a land not far away, there were a few honest Republicans. Now they are all BushBots, programmed robots with little or no dissent and even less personal integrity. A pox on all of them.

2. Amazing.
I will admit that I am a big fan of redemption. Big fan. But in reading that article, one thing leaped out at me:

Republicans will forgive and forget for one of their own, get him back on his feet immediately. For others, especially those with more melanin in their skin then them? Not so much. If at all.

4. Did you see where he wants to work on prison reform?
Doesn't sound like he had a tough go at all. He got visitors, his wife got to see him. He was only 6 hours away. And it was a minimum security prison at a state historic site. Oh and he got to watch the leaves turn!

This guy ran for Congress as a bush loving combat veteran. Made me sick then and makes me even sicker now. :puke:

3. Sounds to me like he's still denying guilt and playing the martyr.
Says he was "disapointed the (crooked real estate deal) turned out that way" and that he "never meant for it to turn out that way".

I've heard exactly that same sort of talk from every serial criminal I've ever known. They're always sorry for the way the WORLD turned out, not for what they themselves DID. They're always the victim of circumstance and coincidence, always surrounded by people who "tricked them into it" or "left them no choice".

He sounds like a very common con man to me, so I have no doubt whatsoever that he'll find a place in the Republican Party without too much trouble.

7. LOL Check out the comments

As a KS Democrat, I would like to thank Mr. Taff for helping start the downfall of the KS repukelican party. Now if we can get Kobach arrested as well, that would just be too sweet.

If Adam had been a Democrat he would have never been even charged with a crime. They seem to always find ways to come after people who believe in America

22. If he'd been a Democrat
he wouldn't have been charged with a crime? I don't think I follow that reasoning. I'd say that if he'd been a Democrat he'd have spent a lot more jail time. Actually, if he'd been a Democrat he probably wouldn't have done the fraud, but perhaps I'm being really naive here.

14. Agreed. Every statement either minimizes or totally dodges his own responsibility.
“I took what happened extremely hard,”

“I was very disappointed that I would allow myself to get into that situation."

"It pained me beyond description knowing I had let down good people who believed in me.”

“We all have difficulties in our lives, whether we bring them on ourselves or not."

Meanwhile, back in realityland:

Taff went to prison March 22 last year after he was convicted of
wire fraud and the violation of federal campaign-finance laws.
He had withdrawn $300,000 from his campaign account, represented it
as a down payment for a $1.2 million home in Lake Quivira, then about
an hour later returned the money to his campaign coffers.

At Taff’s sentencing, U.S. District Judge John W. Lungstrum said Taff
had “debased the public’s trust” and noted in court that the transaction
was well planned and far more than a spur-of-the-moment decision to buy
a nice house.

5. This is what he was jailed for: campaign and wire fraud
From the article:

Taff went to prison March 22 last year after he was convicted of wire fraud and the violation of federal campaign-finance laws. He had withdrawn $300,000 from his campaign account, represented it as a down payment for a $1.2 million home in Lake Quivira, then about an hour later returned the money to his campaign coffers.

At Taff’s sentencing, U.S. District Judge John W. Lungstrum said Taff had “debased the public’s trust” and noted in court that the transaction was well planned and far more than a spur-of-the-moment decision to buy a nice house.

Lungstrum also sentenced co-defendant John D. Myers, who sold the $1.2 million home to Taff, to five months in prison and a $50,000 fine. Myers has since purchased the house back from Taff for the same amount Taff paid for it.

The caption ought to read: "I've learned how to plaster a shit-eating, come-to-Jesus smile on my face, and say "I'm really, really, really, really sorry, and I've learned a lot and grown a lot. And I'm REALLY sorry!"

16. There is a silver lining here: any Repub who gets interested in prison
Edited on Sun May-06-07 11:26 AM by lulu in NC
reform is to the good. Of course, progressive types get interested in stuff like prison reform by being compassionate and talking to ex-cons. Repubs have to actually be thrown in jail before they take an interest.

17. I can imagine
that his idea of Prison Reform is something along the line of more tennis courts at the "minimum" security prison he resided at, or perhaps a bathroom attendant and towel boy in the clubhouse.

Perhaps even Chivas to replace the Cutty Sark at the bar.

:sarcasm:

15. That grin reminds me of Teddy Haggard.
There's more than one way of being a whore. Selling ones integrity to the Republic lie that they were untouchable and free to screw over their campaign donors is just another way of doing what we punish women for doing with their own bodies.

24. Your OP doesn't give any indication what he went to prison for (it's in the article).
He filched $300K from his campaign fund (it was a Repub primary) as collateral or something to make a down payment on a 1.2 million dollar house he was purchasing, and then returned it one hour later to the campaign fund. I'm guessing it must have been some kind of collateral to have in his bank account or something, otherwise he couldn't have just "borrowed" it for an hour.
