WASHINGTON - Now that the White House is searching for a "war czar," it begs the question of who has been coordinating U.S. involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan the past four years.

A team of West Wing players led by national security adviser Stephen Hadley has tried to keep turf-conscious agencies marching in the same direction on military, political and reconstruction fronts. A few Bush aides say privately, however, that the White House probably should have recruited someone to oversee the war effort a year ago.

Critics say the administration's job of coordinating the war has never gone smooth enough or fast enough. And now two key members of the White House team focused on the war are leaving.

"The problem is not broad strategy and policy, it's that the bureaucracy is so inefficient and there's been so little follow-up that the machine doesn't work," former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said.

-----------------
All we needed to do all this time was hire a war czar! Think of all the human suffering we could've avoided if only we'd had a war czar!

I guess czar is Russian for Caesar, and we all know how that worked out.

Can you believe that this is what the republicans are talking about? Seeking out a war czar? As if?

Just when you think they can't get any stupider over there in neo con land, they do.

5. I wonder how this ties into WW2 and a two front war?
Plus on top of that we were just part of a fighting force that had many countries fighting each other. At the end Ike was the head of the Europe part of the war but I would hardly call him a Czar of war. What has happened to our 'guy' in the WH? Doesn't Bush do all this stuff like he fusses about daily?

6. It's "Hard Work"
Between being CIC, fightin' off Nancy and Harry, and trying to catch a vacation or two, it's hard work running a couple of wars.

One question: If they do get a War Czar, will they have to design a new uniform?

8. LOL...good idea
A couple of different ones too. A heavy wool green paisley one for the winter and a light lace number for those hot Washington summers.

How about a DU contest to design it?

11. I hereby volunteer to be the nation's war czar.
First, I want a snappy uniform, like former surgeon general C. Everett Koop's, then I want complete accountability, till it all fails miserably, then I want a guaranteed medal of freedom hung on my neck by bush himself. Then I will accept all the blame, be whisked away to an undisclosed location where I will write my memoirs, and do the lecture apologia circuit.

Then I want my death faked like the Enron guy, whereupon I'll retire in baronial splendor with a new face and a new wife and career. Spain would be nice, or Cleveland.
