4. They have a close up of a large twisted green metal wreckage in photo 12
which is visible in many of the other shots, but from farther away. I'd bet that was a water tower. All the small towns I've seen seem to have one around there somewhere.

You can also see that of the trees which were lucky enough to remain standing, their LEAVES were all ripped off, and most of their branches.

I just can't grasp how any wind could be that wild. So very frightening. It's almost unbearable to think that if global warming continues this tornado stuff will become more frequent and more extreme. Hard to accept that we are so helpless against this crap.

58. Or the top storage facility for the water. I think you're right. Sad...
"The city water tower in Greensburg is a huge silver and green beacon pointing the way towards the world's largest hand dug well. Completed in 1888 at a cost of $45,000, it was an engineering marvel of it's day. Work crews of a dozen or so men, comprised of farmers, cowboys and drifters, worked from daylight until dark with tools no more sophisticated than pick, shovel and bucket to excavate the enormous amount of soil from the 32 foot diameter by 105 foot deep shaft. These men were paid from 50 cents to a dollar a day. Another crew cut native stone from a quarry 12 miles away and hauled it to the site in horse drawn wagons. These wagons had slots in their bottoms, and the dirt removed from the well as hauled away in these wagons. On the return trip to the quarry, the slots were opened and the dirt drained out gradually. The walls of the well were braced every twelve feet or so with timbers to prevent collapse until the rock could be laid. These timbers were then sawed off, the remains of which can still be seen today sticking through flush with the stones of the wall."

I come from a small town in Iowa - basically every town has one.

As for the trees, in stronger tornadoes, that's what they end up like - all leaves and most branches stipped and gone, usually leaving just the main trunk and a few of the larger artery branches. It's a truly eerie sight. Looks like a bomb went off. Consider that a category 5 Hurricane will have winds of 155mph or more, but an F4 tornado has winds of 207-260 mph and an F5 has winds of 261-318 mph. They say that an F5 can actually strip the bark off a tree. Of course, hurricanes are much bigger and effect large areas and also last MUCH longer. But it certainly is frightening how in just minutes a tornado can rip through with such devastating force. And this was definitely a big one - a mile wide tornado does not happen often. I'm no expert, but I'm guessing it will be rated an F4.

A strong F3/bordering on F4 tornado narrowly missed our home several years ago. It killed two people, including a young girl, and the damage was terrible. It's very scary to experience.

My heart goes out to the all the people in Greensburg. It will be a long time to recover from this. What's freaky is how it appears the town took a bullseye hit - meaning it didn't just swipe one side of the town or pass by on the edge - it appears to have wiped out almost the entire town. So sad. I hope they all get the help they need.

P.S. I don't know at what point these pictures were taken, but I find it strange that there doesn't appear to be any people around. Usually after these things people are everywhere.

Edited to say - I stand corrected, reports saying it was rated an F5. I figured it would be close. Knew it would be F4 for sure, possibly F5.

They seem to stand up pretty well, even in the strongest tornados. I guess they have to be pretty sturdy to hold all of that grain.

80. The pictures were taken during the day
the tornado went through at night. Last night I was watching one of the Topeka stations and the reporter mentioned something about a curfew. People were being kept away for their own safety and so they wouldn't interfere with rescue operations.

Also, most of the pictures are taken from a distance and smaller objects, like people would be hard to see. I did notice some people at the bottom of picture 24 and there appears to be a body on a couch in #20.

6. From a New Orleanian...
Obviously, a city should never have been built in such a vulnerable place, and therefore, it shouldn't be rebuilt...that would be a foolish waste of taxpayer money. Of course, this is a mute point anyway, since it is clear that the federal government doesn't give a damn about any of us--and we're on our own. But maybe they'll help Kansas? Who knows.

47. Kansas has three parties.
Democrat, Republican, and "Other Republican."

When the fundies wrested control of the state Repub party here from its saner elements, the moderate Republicans began to fight back by teaming up with Democrats to elect a Demcoratic governor, etc. Now many formerly high-ranking Repubs have switched to become Democrats. The current Lieutenant Governor used to be a high-ranking Repub, but he switched parties and ran with Sebelius on her ticket. The current Attorney General is a former Republican who switched to the Democratic Party in order to run against Phill Kline, the superfundy who used to be our AG. (Kline is the one who subpoenaed abortion records and then turned the info over to Bill O'Reilley. You remember that disgusting mess, I'm sure.)

Our sane Republicans are struggling against the extremists that have taken over their party, and they are often switching parties in desperation. Kathleen Sebelius would never have been elected governor were it not for the support of so many Republicans in Kansas.

30. I apologize, proud2blib
I had always heard that Kansas was a very red state, but perhaps the entire nation is changing.

I do feel though, that New Orleans wasn't taken care of, as the high number of black people that lived there, so yes it does contribute to this discussion.

I certainly hope that the poor people in KS are given some help. I feel that it is the job of our government to help out in times like this, as the FEMA before Bush did.

I certainly hope that you and your family weren't affected by this tragedy. I also want to add that as your neighbor in CO, I have family members in KS and I find it to be a beautiful state.

35. You are right, NO was not taken care of and that is repulsive
I also think that all of us need to be concerned about this and NO is not the only disaster ignored by the current WH administration. It's probably the most glaring and the most despicable, but far from the only one.

And yes, KS is really changing. We have a Dem governor, who is the third most popular governor in the US and we have several top level elected officials who used to be republicans but switched to the Dem party. One was the head of the state repub party! I am active as a state Dem delegate and my county, that used to be very red, has Dem functions that are now standing room only.

I know you guys have your own set of issues in CO as well. I just wish we could all fight this battle together instead of making fun of other states that aren't as blue as we would like them to be. And that has nothing to do with natural disasters like tornadoes and hurricanes.

Peace! :hi:

your are so right. We need to fight this battle together. I have been re-reading Orwells classic novel 1984 from my high school days and it is very scary. Who would have ever thought that the Neocons would have gotten to where they are today?

And yeah, CO has its issues. Why, we are the state of Tom Tancredo and Marilyn Manson Musgrave.

It sounds like you are very proud and with good reason. Are you going to come out for the convention next summer? I have been toying with the idea of taking a weeks vacation and volunteering at it. This is history in the making.

65. I took it as sarcasm. This has been said about NO &
Why rebuild where (something) might happen again? Earthquake, tornado, hurricane, flood, fire, drought, etc. Sometimes people forget to use the sarcasm smilie, sometimes the comment must be taken in a larger context that all are not aware of. There are no Red or Blue states, just shades of purple. But I also agree that KS has white people and may get faster help, though I wonder what the heck will happen to this town, these people in the meantime.

I haven't seen such a wide path of destruction from a tornado since the one that hit Xenia, OH in 1974. The pictures resembled the devastation from a small atomic explosion.

Interesting comment by Vodid comparing this to New Orleans. I don't expect you will hear that in the press because this town was probably mostly white. You are only allowed to make comments like "They shouldn't have lived there." about non-whites in the press.

79. Sorry, but that's not true.
In Missouri when the Missouri and Mississippi rivers flood and all the houses in the flood plains are lost, all you read about is how people shouldn't live there. And those people are always white.

Those people *are* usually poor, however. So if there's link to to be made, I think it is a socio-economic link rather than a race-related link.

It ran straight through a much bigger town and did this to many thousands of homes, 35 dead, 680 injured, thousands homeless. I lived nearby and was in HS at the time.

Everything leveled and turned to tiny bits in a path a mile wide, and for a mile on either side, major damage.

76. He still regularly protests at the Lied Center in Lawrence
But I agree, he's realized that he can no longer get the sort of reaction here in Kansas that he can from people who aren't familiar with his long history of disgusting antics.

44. Well we have had so many tornadoes here in my lifetime that have killed
Edited on Sun May-06-07 09:51 AM by proud2Blib
so many more. They have greatly improved the warning systems. Greensburg had 20 minutes and that 20 minutes saved a LOT of lives. It is also common nowadays for us to have tornadoes where no one dies. That was unheard of when I was a kid.

Everyone here in KS has tornado stories. My boss lost her grandmother in a tornado when she was a little girl. She is now almost 50 years old and still shakes when she tells the story. They lived on a farm and were in the storm shelter and her grandmother went back to the house to get some money she had left in her purse. A good friend of mine growing up lost her baby sister in a tornado.

So it really does seem 'good' to have tornadoes where fewer people die.

We need to meet up someday. I teach at KU, and if I remember correctly, you are in KC and are a teacher as well. We aren't that far apart and we have a lot in common.

54. Yup - that looks a LOT like a body.
Don't know about any baby though. Looks like someone on their side - when compared to the couch on the other side of what remains of the room, that looks like the size of a person. The top half is covered by debris.

That person should have flipped the couch over on top of themselves. Probably would have lived - maybe.

38. Decades ago a mile-wide tornado devastated Topeka, Kansas.
It is still referred to with horror and amazement (I don't want to say "shock and awe," for obvious reasons!). I think we are going to see more of these monster tornadoes.

BTW, I live in Kansas, so I am more than a bit frightened at the prospect!

I was 3. I can still remember being in the basement with my mom and my 2 younger sisters. The youngest was only 2 weeks old.

51. I moved to Kansas from PA in 1970, arriving on the
day of my 20th birthday!

I have lived here since. I took all my degrees from KU, and have taught at KU since 1972.

I came here because I married a man who was starting his career here at KU as a Spanish professor. A few years ago, he and his current wife returned to Penn State, which is where I met him. But I stayed here, because I have built my entire adult life here in Lawrence.

I really like it here except for one thing--the heat. It stays so hot for so long!

When you live through a disaster like this you become aware of how precious your little town is. Help from FEMA isn't always there for a long time either. I hope these people find the help and solace they need soon!:grouphug:

I live in Norman, OK. Moore is a mere five miles north of here, where I lived for a decade of my childhood, right off of I35 if anyone understands the significance of the area. Amazingly, the house I grew up in still stands.

I'm doing whatever I can for these folks.

70. Lived in MO and NE for 12 years and was in the basement several
times. Never saw anything like this! Did see several tornadoes forming
out the window from the Lincoln (NE) general aviation facility one time, when
I'd gone to pick up hubby and sons on return from what they used to call 'great adventures' (hubby is general aviation pilot and he took our boys on summer trips
flying in a small plane). I couldn't believe my eyes. Sure enough, the paper
the next day reported that several small tornadoes had formed west of the airport
right at the time we were there! Fortunately, they didn't blow into town.

Didn't even take that long for the surveyors to determine it. I guess the damage made it abundantly obvious to them. :(

How were there so few casualties (relative to the fact the entire town was destroyed) without any basements? Maybe they were there and I just didn't see them from the pictures.

I haven't been watching the news all weekend so I'm seeing all this for the first time just now. I'm so sorry for the people in that town.

85. People look at me like I'm crazy when I tell em tornadoes can get
to be two miles in width! I remember seeing footage of a tornado here in Texas that was miles wide. They couldn't pan out far enough to show it all. It was amazing to learn that as a kid. This planet is amazing and horrifying at the same time. Let us hope this isn't an increase due to climate change.

We had a small tornado hit my town a week ago, was about 300 yards away. Luckily the damage was minimal.
