1. I checked one of the KC stations
It looks like we're going to get some tonight too. A cell is moving this way from the Topeka/Overbrook area. If we're (those of us in Lawrence) are lucky, we'll get the south end of it. http://www.kctv.com/Global/link.asp?L=169721

17. It is really hitting central Kansas so far
as you well know, and we haven't gotten it too bad. Of course last year we had the microburst(s) that showed up unexpectedly (the sirens went off after it happened) on Sunday morning. I don't want to go through that again.

18. Thank you.
This morning the backyard resembles a swamp and we've found out that the roof leaks. The dogs absolutely hate it. But we're far better off than a lot of other people.

There are major roadways underway and there are warnings not to travel certain portions of the Kansas Turnpike between Wichita and Topeka and Lawrence and KC. Rain is predicted for the rest of the week.

11. Lawrence is so cool.
I went to music camp there for five weeks in the summer of 1971. That was lots of fun and we rehearsed all day (choir and orchestra) and did a concert each weekend. New conductor every week. So that was a total of ten concerts.

I remember seeing Comanche of the 7th Cavalry in the museum. And I went to my very first head shop and got somewhat corrupted. It was called The Campus Madhouse and was on a side street from the street where the museum and the William Allen White Journalism School is.

I bought a copy of "Future Shock" at the bookstore.

Everybody lived in the red brick and concrete dorms on the ridge right by the freeway.

13. Did you go to "the Stables"? The Bierschtube"?
I went to KU in '68 and spent many an hour at those places :)

19. I worked at the Sanctuary for years (in the 80's)
which was what the Stables turned into. While I worked there I met the women whose parents owned the Stables. They would come in once in a while and hang out. They would tell us about living above the Stables.

22. I love Lawrence too
I was born here and I'll probably die here. As they say, "there's no place like home."

If you're ever in the area, give us a shout out. The DU'ers in this area like hanging out with each other. This Saturday (5/12) we're getting together to hang out with a visiting DU'er (he's coming to Kansas for Haskell to watch relatives graduate). We love any excuse to get together.

21. I think you're talking about 14th street
The store you went to is probably near where the Wheel and the Hawk (or whatever it's called these days) are located today. Now the headshops are on Massachusetts (the main downtown street) so you can stop by there on your way to the Free State Brewery. ;)

That string of dorms is affectionately called "Daisy Hill" because it used to be a hill of daisies. Any more, the music campers stay at Oliver Hall up the street from my church (Allen Fieldhouse).

4. I'd be sleeping in the cellar. I hope lots of those folks are. But hey, not to sound callous, but if
you're going to live out there, you're going to have to deal with tornadoes.

You're going to live in southern California, you're going to have to deal with wildfires.

You're gong to live in Florida, you're going to have to deal with hurricanes.

We live in New England, and we have to deal with blizzards and Northeasters (No, dammit, they're NOT "Nor'easters." They're "Northeasters.") and spring floods.

Still, our Midwestern friends, keep your heads down tonight, OK? Be safe. You can replace anything except your life.

5. Anybody from Eastern NE/Western IA?
I've got family there...between Lincoln & Omaha, then about 45 miles across the Iowa border.

Looks right nasty on the radar...anyone know what it's like on the ground?

I just finished watching a movie and it looks like i better turn on the weather. I can see some of mother nature's fireworks to the southwest, but dry as a bone here so far. So far.

25. this rain is really intense
My backyard is starting to flood - there's at least a half an inch of standing water killing my new grass. And I don't live near a creek.

Stay safe, everyone.
