Poll question: How many more meals can you prepare without going to the store?
Emergency Preparedness Week drives home the question: (are you ready?

A kit should include vital items that help you and your family endure the first 72 hours of an emergency situation: such as a battery-operated radio, flashlights and extra light bulbs, extra batteries, a utility knife, blankets/sleeping bags, food and bottled water, clothing and footwear, a first aid kit, and a whistle (in case you need to attract attention). Complete emergency kit contents are listed on the "Are You Ready?" pages on ottawa.ca.

19. It's important to have junk food on hand during a crisis, too.
We stockpile those giant cases of chocolate pudding and cheezit snacks from Costco in my closet, rotating it out from time to time. When we lost power for so long during the 2004 hurricanes those junk snacks really helped keep the troops happier.

27. That was my thinking as well.
I can probably meet protein needs for quite a while, but the quality of the meal may be less than thrilling. The beverage choices may also be a real bone of contention. We drink a large amount of milk and after a couple of days it is gonna come down to the powdered milk that I keep for cooking and sauces. That will NOT be popular, but there is always water, tea, or powdered juice mixes.

I keep yeast on hand along with flour and sugar, plus I am rarely without at least a couple dozen eggs. I am also usually pretty well stocked on different rices and beans--both canned and dried. Canned veggies would be my downfall, however, because I don't buy them. I absolutely HATE the texture of any canned veggie, and I refuse to serve them. I suppose if it was summer I could harvest the dandelions in the yard for the greens, but my yard is gonna be pretty durn bare if I dig all of those up at one time...

So, the yard may look like crap, and we may all come up with scurvy if we go too long and run out of our vitamins, but at least we will be able to eat.

23. Don't you think it is time for muddle-class people to realize that there are other humans?
Don't you think it is sad that "progressives" don't even think of this?

What I see are self-congratulatory posts. I see NO POSTS talking about what you have left over to help others with.

Not too long ago, there was a thread about the generosity during the Depression, and the generosity now. This thread exemplifies that difference.

THINK of others.

17. At least a month or more of good food for 6 adult-sized people
We may run out of cow's milk but that's fine w/me (I prefer soy or rice milk anyway, we have plenty of it).

We have two weeks worth of bottled water but we definitely need to add more (hurricane season is coming).

BTW, those who are in farming communities do this regularly. Most of them shop for a month or more at a time because of how long it takes to go into town, plus it's easy to put a quarter or half grazing cow into a freezer than bits and pieces at a time. When one cans the beans or the spaghetti sauce it's for months at a time.

I miss our old giant walk-in pantry in the below-grade garage which kept it all nice and cool.

20. A week, at least, with or without gas/electric availability.
Edited on Sun May-09-10 02:29 PM by pinto
I have a lot of dry goods on hand - rice, beans, peas, pasta. A week's worth of canned veggies / fruit. A week's worth of dried milk. A week's worth of beef, frozen up in 2 day portions. 7 - 2 quart containers (plastic juice bottles) of tap water in the freezer. Charcoal and a hibachi. I use cast iron cookware, so it'd be usable on a BBQ outside.

Not really on hand for a disaster, per se, but it's how I shop. I'm on a limited income, so there's those times at the end of the month when I hit the "backup". The frozen water bottles help the freezer operate more efficiently, but would be available in a large scale loss of services, and transferable to a cooler to keep other frozen stuff good.

29. I would have to get very creative and we would miss a few things
but we could eat for more than a month, probably for two, on what we have in the house. We would run out of coffee in about 3 weeks and the bitching would be hard to handle, but we could survive.

31. I'm good for at least three days
if I couldn't get to the store for some reason. Maybe a full week so long as I have electricity.

I recently rehabilitated my old bread machine, and that's been wonderful to have.

Since I live alone I can actually eat very cheaply when I want to. I love to make soups and stews and freeze individual portions. Normally I grocery shop once a week, but sometimes I can go ten days without a serious grocery shop. Right now I've got a bunch of stuff in the freezer, and my meals would get somewhat boring, but I'd be fine for a surprisingly long time.

I don't actually try to stay stocked up in case of natural disasters. If I lived in hurricane country I might be better about it. I used to live in Tornado Alley, so I should have been good about it, but never was. I'm just not the OMIGOD THE NEXT DISASTER IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER!!!! kind of person.

41. I am to broke to go to a store now.
I'm a caregiver for an elderly woman and we both have physical limitations so neither of us can work. By the 5th of every month she pays bills to banks charging double what she borrowed so we go hungry nearly every month. This month is especially bad and we're out of food except leftover junk barely edible ...so when we (I) go to the store now I get barely enough for a day and hope there's enough for tomorrow. Well, tomorrow already happened and my meal for the day was some half dried out cabbage fried in some old grease. I survive on barely nothing almost.

48. I like to keep over a week's worth of food in the house.
One never knows when a "surprise" will occur. Right now, we have, let's see...

three solid meals of chicken, and possibly four
one meal of ground beef
two meals with round steak
one meal's worth each sausage and bacon
three meals worth of ham
a pizza
some On-Cor Chicken Parmagiana (it was really cheap)

...so that's 13 or 14 meals in main courses off the top of the ol' noggin. There are perhaps four meals worth of potatoes, about five pounds of pasta, enough rice for maybe three meals and I think eight boxes of macaroni & cheese. I don't think I have enough vegetables and fruit for more than a week; about a week's supply right now and that's it. Two loaves bread and two packages bagels, a couple pounds of cold cuts...

...if the freezer dies I'll have a problem, but otherwise, I have enough food for almost two weeks.
