NYC may eliminate 6,400 teacher jobs.
NEW YORK — The city may have to eliminate thousands of teacher jobs but won't have to shrink the police force as planned in the next fiscal year.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg gives a budget update today for the fiscal year beginning July 1.

The city has delayed its spring update while waiting to see how much aid it will get from Albany.

The state budget is a month late.

Early state proposals cut funding to the city by as much as $1.3 billion.

The plan to be unveiled later today preserves funding for nearly 900 police officer jobs that were slated to be cut by attrition. But 6,400 teacher jobs are in danger, through a combination of layoffs and attrition.

New York's public schools have about 80,000 teachers.

2. I still remember being three to a desk and nowhere to put my knees.
Still learned to read and write, however.

3. Well it only makes sense that they increase the police force...
since all those dropouts are going to be out on the streets.

4. Here's the thing. The City's Controller has found lot of money in other departments
and that money can be used to keep the teachers.

Here's the story about his audit: http://www.comptroller.nyc.gov/press/2010_releases/pr10-04-045.shtm

5. Pink Hearts not Pink Slips
Says AFT President Randi Weingarten:

The magnitude of the cuts is staggering. The number of educators who might be pink-slipped in the fall is nearly equal to the population of Toledo, Ohio. This isn’t just about saving jobs; it’s about saving the next generation.

The federal government didn’t walk away from Wall Street, and it should not walk away from our kids and their public schools. These massive cuts in teachers and programs will seriously jeopardize the hard work being done in school districts throughout the nation on genuine reforms to boost student achievement.

6. Sign this petition to protect our children's future
and preserve the quality of education in our schools and on our campuses.

I Support: All educators who put their heart and soul into their work, every day making a real difference in the lives of children.

I Support: Stopping the devastating impact educational budget cuts—and the resulting layoffs—that will have on our students, their educational institutions and our communities.

I Support: Federal legislation that will provide more than $23 billion to help school districts avoid layoffs and cuts in vital services for children. We need to preserve the education lifeline our students deserve.

12. The rubber rooms are already being closed down. Besides........

shouldn't people *accused* of incompetence/insubordination/malfeasance have a right to a hearing and due process?

13. They should
and swiftly. The fact that the NYC school system kept people in them for years shows that there might be other places where there is wasteful spending, as well.

11. But they will spend 5 million to recruit new teachers...
from private companies. It's astounding.

NY's education dept wants $5 million to recruit new teachers while laying off 8,500.

"The city may lay off 8,500 teachers, but education officials still want approval for a contract of up to $5 million a year to recruit even more teachers.

..."Since 2000, the New Teacher Project has contracted with the city to recruit New York City Teaching Fellows. For this school year, the group received $2.8 million for recruiting 705 teachers.

.."The New Teacher Project (TNTP) is a United States non-profit organization founded by Michelle Rhee."

Rhee runs the schools in DC.

Spending public money to hire teachers from private companies while they are laying off public school teachers.
