Exam stress? Numbers show domestic violence spikes during exams

SACRAMENTO, CA - With exam season approaching, newly-released data from Sacramento State University indicates some students may need to be concerned with more than just all-night study sessions in the coming month.

Information from the Student Health Center at Sac State shows that, during final exams and mid terms, domestic violence escalates among students.

"I don't think people understand that intimate partner violence is such a part of the adolescent population," said Jessica Heskin, a violence and sex assault counselor at Sacramento State. "I see a lot of it during midterms and finals, where the batterer will keep the victim up all night in arguments so that they're exhausted the next night."

A few years ago, she began noticing the trend. Heskin said 61 percent of her domestic violence cases in 2009 were reported during midterms and finals.

1. This Is New???
I recall my college days of the early 70s and some of the crazy things that happened during Finals week. Most shocking was seeing someone do a swan dive off a 15 story dormitory after she failed to get the grade she was hoping for. Working at the college radio station we always saw a rise in suicides, drug overdoses and physical violence in and around finals as the stress was too much for some. Looks like nothing's changed.
