Should Janet Jackson have been tasered for ruining the halftime show?
Edited on Wed May-05-10 07:48 PM by Bonobo
According to many, many people here, the logic behind tasering the young man who ran on the field during a Phillies game was that he "ruined" the game for a few seconds.
The secondary reason given most often here is that he represented a threat to the players.

Well, the first point is easily countered by asking if Janet Jackson should have been tasered.
For the second point, let me enquire as to whether there is any other situation where an unarmed person would be considered a threat for simply showing too much enthusiasm.

I really think the US has gone nuts and that the madness has worked its way deeply into many individuals.

To advocate that kind of torturous pain (yes, it is torturous pain. If you don't believe me, watch some videos of people being tasered) for the crime of running onto a sports firld and interrupting a sporting event.... Well, folks, I am just gonna say it again:

YOU NEED TO CHECK YOURSELVES, BEFORE YOU WRECK YOURSELVES.

You have all changed, or this website has changed.\

But as David Byrne said, "Something ain't right."

NOTE: Please watch the video and tell me again why you think he should have been tased. The argument that he was a danger DOES NOT WASH.

Halftime show ruined Super Bowl for many
Parents shouldn't have to worry about exposes like that

After spending eight days in Houston covering the Super Bowl, I returned to Los Angeles and spent three nights on my radio show breaking down the halftime show and Janet Jackson's memorable moment. I will not get into the details of Jackson and her friend Justin Timberlake’s attempt to gain more publicity, but I will tell you that real sports fans are very upset by that stunt.

CBS and MTV are not to blame just as we should not throw the NFL under the bus for this racy halftime stunt. It was Janet's fault, and she knows it. I have seen various polls that describe America’s degree of frustration and offense after witnessing Janet's uncovered breast, and I have digested all of the numbers. The only people who should be asked to comment on this should be the parents of kids between 8-16 years old. These are the people who were most greatly affected and had to stop having fun on Super Bowl Sunday and move toward damage control. Who cares if a 33-year-old man with no kids laughed at the halftime show and continued to hit the rewind button on his TiVo? I could care less if a father of two children in their twenties thought that Jackson didn't cross the line because he sees much worse each night on cable television. I have two young boys that are 2 1/2 and 7 months in age. I feel lucky they are not of the age where I would have had to sit them down and explain to them the definition of sexual harassment.

Parents who called into my radio show were outraged because they don't want to be forced to "fast forward" the discussion of sex with their kids because of what they witnessed during a football game. This topic isn't about the lack of morals in America or the fact that several kids don't have the proper supervision at home to keep them sheltered from acts like we watched last Sunday. This is about a Super Bowl that for many people was ruined because a pop star wanted to sell more CDs.

3. I didn't think Janet ruined anything.
I like boobs. :)

SO no I wouldn't tazer he. Then again she was suppose to be on the field so we are talking about apples and oranges here.

Run onto field and you get tazered. The human race is very adaptable. If the species learns that running on to a field gets you tazered it will happen less often.

I had to get tazered in the Army. It hurts like shit but before you brain can even realize what is going on it is over. No real lasting effects after about 5 minutes.
If it was the choice of getting shot, tazered, sprayed with OC, or hit with billy club I would pick Tazer.

you have no idea what that asshat was thinking or intending...and you know it but you cannot admit it. it looked like he was having fun...but you really don't know. that fan that went after Federer a while back. he started off just waving a flag and then proceeded to put a hat on Federer...what if he had decided to do something else? it would have been ok because he was acting the fool to start with???

9. No. And since you insist on rehashing a thread that's already been locked, I'll say this again...
I looked in the mirror this morning after I read your post. Wanna know what I didn't see? I didn't see an idiot who was likely to run onto the field at a professional sporting event staring back at me. What I did see was someone who understands that every law applies to him as well as everyone else, and who also understands that he's responsible for what happens to him when he gets caught breaking those laws. That's what I saw after you demanded that everyone who thought the Philly idiot ran onto the field got what he deserved look into their mirror.

I'll bet he never does it again, and I consider that to be 1 PROBLEM SOLVED.

Oh, and ITBL!

12. No reason to lock a new thread. I broke no rules.
You are advocating violence and torture for very little provocation.

Your argument that no one will do it again is not impressive since the same logic could be applied to someone tasered for jaywalking. No one will ever JAYWALK again.

Would you care to dig deeper for some REAL justification for torturing someone?

or maybe the tennis player that was stabbed...how's that for just a couple of examples that have to be taken into consideration when some asshat runs onto the field. you don't know why they're there and they won't stop...should we let them just finish whatever they are up to???

let's stretch YOUR assertion to the end of the world...should someone be allowed to run at the president without being stopped? about as absurd as your OP.

26. If Mayor Michael Nutter had run onto the field
would he have been tasered?

Yet this kid and his family were owners and paid to subsidize the Phillies, their excessive salaries to players, the stadium, the police, and of course the wealthy owners.

We the people do enormously subsidize professional sports yet the only thing we ever get for it is an occasional taser up the ass.

Watch the video, I posted the link in the original OP just now.

The guy was running around iun the outfield, waving a towel and surrounded by about a dozen cops or guards.

There is no argument to be made that he posed a threat to anyone, so you will have to dig deeper into the barrel to com up with an argument.

Watch the video and then come back (if you dare to be intellectually honest that is)

82. Good
I saw two assholes jump on the field live at a Sox game and start beating the shit out of a coach for the opposing team.

ANY asshole who jumps onto a field must be assumed to have violent intent. Tasering is reasonable force.

I now think Tasering ANYBODY who runs onto a sports field during a game sould become SOP in ALL jurisdictions.

Don't fuck around, just taser the fuck out of the idiot.

The more you complain about it, the more I support it.

Fuck yeah,

TASER THE WORLD!

68. let's stretch the situation and see how you answer...
young man in the throes of joy at getting to see the president goes running toward him with a big ass smile on his face and waving a towel (or maybe something he just wants signed). He jumps over a barricade and rushed toward the president dodging a security guard. What do you think the odds are that he will get to the president? What do you think the odds are that a Taser would be the least of his worries in a situation like this? And lastly, does that athlete not deserve protection as best it can be applied?

i wonder...

69. Dude, I posted that as a joke.
I posted it again in another reply to you. No, I don't think someone should be tasered just for being a jackass, but I really don't have a problem with this particular jackass getting a few volts. Again, I'm willing to bet he'll never run out on the field again.

72. I am just trying to get a reasonably coherent REASON from you.
If being a jackass isn't enough reason, is your argument basically that it will be a deterrent?

I am trying to get past the snark to understand your reasoning.

My honest assessment is that America's base line acceptance for what is appropriate use of force has gotten so low that we are in dangerous territory.

If these are the responses from DU, what do you think about the rest of the country? Seriously, for one second please!

78. The "snark" is because it's somewhat funny.
Edited on Wed May-05-10 08:59 PM by NaturalHigh
Reasons:

1. Whether he was an actual danger or not, I have basically zero tolerance for anyone running onto the field. Like another poster noted, fans have attacked players and coaches before. Yes, deterrence is needed.

2. Again, this guy was, in fact, a jackass. If he hadn't jumped out onto the field and run from the cops and security (and, I think, at least one player) he wouldn't have gotten tasered.

Did he deserve to be tasered? I really don't know. Maybe it was a judgment call by the cop or maybe it was procedure. It's hard for me to work up much sympathy, though, for someone who rushes out and basically screams "tase me" at the cops.

80. I understand and just to reitterate....
I am less concerned for the individual jackass then I am about how blithely we have come to accept tasering as an appropriate response to mild offenses.

Please remember that tasering has killed people on numerous occasions.

They should be used more judiciously at the very least.

Also, they are painful. Very painful. I am disturbed that we , as a progressive community, have come to the point where we are so callous about dispensing pain upon individuals for trivial offenses.

Again, it is the REACTION that concerns me. It is a sure sign of becoming progressively inured to violence.

Hardly noticed sitting in the stands. As far as the kid being tasered, he shouldn't have been. Fascism builds in a society first through the mind through gradual acceptance.

77. Because in this case, it is unecessary violence sanctioned by the "law"
It is much more dangerous on a socio-political level. I am sorry you do not see the danger of allowing law enforcement such power to torture over such trivial things

I am worried you do not see how it relates to the creep towards fascism.

79. you need not worry about me
and i will not worry about you. and we completely disagree here. the child was evading officers after trespassing and becoming a threat to players on the field...i realize you do not agree with that assessment but you really have to admit you don't have any knowledge of his intent and neither could the officers. if someone were a threat to me, mine, you or yours i would find tazing them to be a minor deal...threats are real...people are nuts...bad shit happens...and if they had NOT stopped him and he had injured someone (even a lowly umpire) then people would be question why he WASN'T tazed...
