Lines on a map.
I am on this side of the line. They are on that side of the line. Who made the line? Beats me. Who decided where to put the line? Beats me. When I look at a map I see the line. When I look at the ground I can't tell where the line is. All I see is dirt.

Now I'm standing on this side of the "line", in my dirt. As I look across the "line" there is another person, standing on their dirt. Yeah he's a little more brown then I am, but he's smiling, and his dirt looks as dirty as my dirt. This man smiles at me and starts to walk towards me. Frantically I look down, looking for the line, SHIT no line, just dirt! Fuck what do I do now? In seconds this person could be standing on MY DIRT! I must arm myself, build walls, fences, send soldiers, and do whatever it takes to protect my DIRT.

Why is this dirt different then that dirt? What makes this dirt better than that dirt? Is this my dirt and that's your dirt? Why am I allowed to stand on this dirt and someone else is not? Why is our dirt is so special and so important that we can't have just anyone standing on our DIRT? I'll tell you why it's so special... IT'S AMERICAN DIRT! FINEST DIRT INTHE WORLD. THERE IS NO BETTER DIRT ANYWHERE. YOU CAN DIG ALL THE WAY TO CHINA AND YOU WILL NOT FIND BETTER DIRT THAN WHAT WE HAVE RIGHT HERE IN THE GOOD OLD USA. And we will defend to the death our right to keep you off of our DIRT.

So there.

2. Shrug
I will defend to life.

I do think borders matter for having segments for representative governments, but not to treat people with less dignity.

3. The line is between White Majority society and others , why do you think it was possible for Texas
to secede from Mexico , and was later easily accepted into the USA , because Texas was majority White.

If ever Mexico wanted to become the 51th state , ha ... pigs will fly first. While Canada will have a much easier time (should they decide to request joining the union)

What is it with us crazy Americans being the *only* *people* in the *world* that try to control who lives in our country? Why can't we be more like everybody else?

Oh, wait...

Is a bad thing bad only if we do it?

11. Well I live in America and we are debating "immigration"
and people sit here and talk about "our land" or "their land" like any of this fucking dirt belongs to anyone. I singled out Americans because I am one and I have no right to shit on other countries if mine is as bad or worse.

Frankly I hate explaining my posts but the point was borders are nothing but lines on a map, put there to divide people. Period. They serve no purpose, and do no good, but in a world where we are raised from birth to believe that these lines mean something it's going to be nearly impossible to solve any "immigration problems" without changing our base thinking.

14. Well I think your premise is wrong
Borders serve a very useful purpose.

Just because they are arbitrary does not mean that they do not have real-world practical consequences. They create defined regions we can use to determine the applicability of laws, political authority, taxation, etc.

Do you think that the people in China should be able to determine the environmental policy of the people living in the United States?

Do you think that the U.S. was wrong to unilaterally decide to topple Iraq's government?

13. "Americans" - world-widely know as USA inhabitants states it's arrogance
.
.
.

There are North, South and Central Americas;

yet only USA people are referred to as Americans - - how come?

And the USA has sorta singled itself out around the globe by having more of it's military bases around the Globe than the rest of the World combined.

It plain speak

THE USA GETS IN EVERYBODY'S FACE!!

And surprise, surprise, surprise

The World don't like it.

5. Free trade agreements need to be balanced
give workers the right to unfettered access to the marketplace across geopolitical lines to sell their labor.

9. When you make a segment of workers de facto criminals
Edited on Wed May-05-10 03:55 PM by killbotfactory
Whether or not they were enticed to cross a border illegally, are productive, or are obeying every other law, then that segment is easier to exploit.

We need the same protections for all workers the world over, or at the very least those we have free trade agreements with. If our free trade partners can't or won't offer their own citizens productive work at reasonable rate then we should not have free trade agreements with them.

12. And much like religion...
And much like religion that exists no where but our own imaginations, these lines on a map cause wars, poverty, false pride, elitism, provincialism, and suffering.

And, much like religion, these lines on a map have a cadre of willing corpses ready to die, and a following of those who will defend a dogma based on little more than imaginary thinking to the death..
