Stomach cancer up 70% in young white adults
http://www.techjackal.net/other/2010/05/05/stomach-cancer-up-nearly-70-percent-in-young-white-adults/
<snip>
In a recent find, doctors have discovered that stomach cancer is on the rise in young, white adults. The research, which was conducted by the National Cancer Institute, stated that all cancers in adults are on the decline but in the 25 to 39 year old age group stomach cancer has increased nearly 70 percent over the last three decades.

The NCI examined cases between 1977 and 2006 of a cancer of the lower stomach. The study revealed that there was nearly 39,000 documented cases of the lower stomach cancer which is caused by a chronic infection with a bacteria called h. plyori. There were huge decreases in other cancers where the study focused on ages 25 to 84 but it was the 25 to 39 group with the lower stomach cancer that showed very stunning increases over the time period.

Stomach cancer can be contributed to many things but the doctors in the study mentioned high salt diets and salt preserved foods as a huge catalyst. One thing that doctors pointed to about the huge increase of salt intake in the United States was the advent of fast food restaurants where salt is constantly used as flavoring for things such as french fries. Stomach cancer is the fourth largest cancer in the country. The study did not look at upper stomach cancers which are also a common condition which is linked to gastric reflux. Still, this is a very alarming find when it comes to cancer to young, white men in their late 20’s and 30’s.

5. I have two young girls...

...they're 8 and 9--and we try to impress upon them that fast food is an "infrequent"
option. Like you said, every once in a while.

Both McDonald's restaurants in our town have 1.49 Happy Meals on Wednesday. The lines
are always out of the parking lot and spilling into the street and the restaurant is
packed to the gills.

I know I'm probably a horrible mom, but we do McDonald's a few times a month. I have my kids
get one meal with apples and one meal with fries--and they split those. And they get
white milk, no pop!

I really hate McDonald's, but I hate cooking every night too! I lose mom points for
being a slacker on Wednesdays. :(

my boys are now 12 and 15.

we do 20 oz (never more and they have never gotten those huge gulps) soda on monday and friday. as i said, fast food every couple weeks. we rarely go to restaurants. no, it isn't fun cooking BUT

at this age, my boys have talked, and often recently, how much they appreciate the implementation of these restrictions on moderation. we also discuss the cost of fast food and restaurants. so it is both nutritional and fiscal responsibility, lol, for moderation.

boys tell me how so many families spend so much time eating out.

it is a good thing, and they do appreciate and value being different.

meal time is also a big deal in this house. getting family together and spending the time talking. youngest has started reading times magazine, so we have been discussing current events more than normal. tonight, we are going to discuss the spill and cheneys secret energy meeting, lol. it is a blast.

also, i cook monday thru friday. saturday and sunday is a free for all.

on edit; a big difference is i am a stay at home. a lot easier for me to cook nightly. i totally understand the two working family not getting to it, not wanting to get to it, or much harder getting to it.

9. My 8 year old daughter absolutely HATES McDonalds and refuses to eat there.
My 6 year old son, on the other hand, loves it!

We live in California and have a "fast food" place called "In-n-Out" burgers that makes amazing, fresh, fast food. This is the only fast food that my daughter will eat. We eat at "In-n-Out" a couple of times a month and, like you, no sodas! The kids know this and don't even ask for soda anymore.

4. My first "real" job was at McDonald's. I worked the grill.
Edited on Wed May-05-10 10:10 AM by Romulox
I cooked hamburgers on a clam shell grill my entire shift (except for cleaning), and we held them for a strict amount of time--any more than that, and they were tossed into a large purpose-made garbage bin. There was no microwave in the store.

I am completely and utterly convinced that the quality of McDonald's has substantially declined since then, as has the cost relative to inflation.

7. My first was at a Wendy's back in the early 1980's
The meat and produce-whole foods-came in early in the AM. We prepared everything except the buns from scratch. All burgers were cooked to order. Nothing simply sat there. I haven't eaten a burger in 16 years, but I did have a Wendy's chicken sandwich about five years ago. It was HORRIBLE. I felt nauseous after eating it and haven't eaten fast food since. So yes, I absolutely concur-there has been a SUBSTANTIAL decline and the effects of such are now being seen everywhere. Corporate greed over all else, as always.

6. The only known reservoir of H pylori is humans.
It is generally believed to be spread by poor sanitation that allows some path of fecal-oral transmission.

It is probably the most common pathological bacterial infection in humans.

In otherwords if you wash your hands before food prep and meals and don't kiss-ass at work it may reduce your risk

12. That's especially true if we eat shit.
H. pylori is transmitted along fecal-oral routes.
