Current pet peeve about the oil disaster
It's driving me up one wall and down the other when I continually hear people talking about this and using words such as:

1) May, as in "This oil spill MAY cause an economic crisis"
2) Could, as in "Oil in the Gulf COULD continue leaking for weeks"
3) Might, as in "This might become one of the biggest ecological disasters in history"

Just start reading all of the comments by officials and reporters and notice how often they hedge using these words, when it's a fucking CERTAINTY that it WILL

WILL

WILL

WILL

do either approximately or exactly what they are talking about.

I'm so goddamned tired of this bullshit language bullshit they keep pulling!!

4. It's "cover-your-ass" speak. Never make a definite statement
or you may live to regret it.

6. That's a decent pet peeve.
My pet peeve is that the USA still avoids doing what smaller nations do all the time.

When Rolling Stone magazine sent a reporter up to cover the Exxon Valdez spill back in the day, the reporter not only pointed out the magnitude of the disaster, he also discussed how quickly and easily the Nation of Scotland would go in to handle large spills. Despite being a MUCH smaller nation than ours, Scotland's government and oil people provided all of the latest in the priciest and best equipment to handle such a situation.

And of course, they wouldn't have avoided spending the suggested $ 500K repair so that it would not have occurred to begin with.

8. First of all, this isn't a "spill." A spill implies a container and a finite amount of "spillage."
Edited on Sun May-02-10 04:10 PM by Raster

This is a high-pressure oil well, drilled deep into the Earth to tap reservoirs of oil, and it has failed. It's containment and safety features:rofl: have also failed. Dramatically. It will continue to spew hundreds of thousands of gallons of DEADLY crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico, and will be basically a death sentence for any living creature that comes in contact with it. It will poison entire regions of the American East Coast.

This is not a "spill" nor is it a "leak." This is an environmental disaster of untold proportions, which will have detrimental effects for decades or even longer.

The corporate-controlled media talking heads are just saying what their masters are ordering them to say and trying to mitigate the public relations damage as much as possible. What else are they going to say: "the notoriously dirty and toxic oil industry finally had the horrendous offshore drilling accident that has been predicted for years. The consequences to the environment will be staggering. The consequences to the American Gulf and East coasts will potentially cataclysmic and will reverberate for decades. BP is already looking for scapegoats, and, no shocker, it appears much of the shoddy work attributing to this massive ecological disaster can be laid at the feet of Halliburton."

9. But the *liberal* media could never bite the oily hand that feeds it
why do ya think the fact Exxon hasn't paid but a mere pittance of what it was fined and that PW sound is still fucked up doesn't make the news unless it's buried in some human interest story and always tempered w/ some BS fluff about how hard Exxon worked to mitigate damages.

10. Exxon had paid a mere pittance of the Valdez judgment against it because,

unlike Exxon, which is an "immortal person," the persons to whom Exxon owed the settlements were "mortal people" with mortal lifespans. Exxon is scum and a founding member of the Texas-American Petroleum Cartel.

I am mad as hell about what's happened and how it's not being fixed. :grr:

Anyone who isn't angry about it isn't paying attention!

14. They treat us like children...
...who couldn't possibly grasp big, important concepts.

We never get the truth anymore. It is kept from us, sugar-coated, covered up
or sloganized into some bizarre it's-not-so-bad happy talk.

This is why conspiracy theories are so prevalent. When you are constantly
being lied to by those in power--it leaves people guessing and thinking the
worst.

I agree that the worst probably will happen. We know there is a major oil
leak. We don't know how many barrels are leaking a day, because we're
being lied to. However, we do know that their solution (a dome) has never
been done before and could be just some fantastical solution--and also this
supposed dome isn't even ready yet. It won't be ready for eight days, as reported
this afternoon by CNN.

This is all so crazy.
