Gallup: Republicans losing edge on independents for midterm elections.

From a number of Gallup polls it is becoming clearer that the huge Republican advantage for the midterm elections is starting to seriously erode.

The so called generic ballot question is now even:

http://www.gallup.com/poll/politics.aspx

More importantly a 4 point increase for Democrats and a 5 point drop among Republicans among Independents may indicate that independents are getting tired of the Republicans radical right wing drift.

This is also coresponding to a + 4 point tick in the independents approval rating of the President (from 44 to 48).

And if you go deep into the tabs on Gallup you find that the one thing that should make Republicans happy actually will work against them:

The fact that the Republicans are so "enthusiastic" about voting means that in real life they will be less likely to be satisfied with reasonable moderate candidates and will continue to show enthusiasm for primary challengers to GOP incumbents and support more right wing candidates in primaries.

All of that enthusaism will continue to push the party further to the right and alienate more and more independent voters.

4. And that's why it's so important for the Dems to push back
Edited on Thu Apr-29-10 11:20 AM by rocktivity
Not for the sake of impressing the base, but for the sake of impressing the fringe.

Dem seats were lost in Virginia, Massachusetts, and New Jersey because the people who really the put Dems over in '06 and '08 either went back to voting Repub or stayed home in the face of what they saw as Dem ineffectiveness.

3. Also, Independents are just that Independent. Fox News should
take a clue. People catch on to lies at a certain point
and recoil.

IMO, Beck's slide in the ratings just might be a warning
to Republicans. All the "revisionist history" , more
like rewriting history can be damaging permanently.
If you lie or misinterpret history, you will lie about
anything.

Another factor IMO, in time we will find Palin, Bachman
and the TeaPartiers overplayed their hand. Some of the
stuff spewed made neat TV clips but could be very off-putting
to whole segments of society. Do not dare call me a snob.
The truth hurts sometimes, but if no one ever speaks the
truth how can corrections be made.

5. "Enthusiastic Republicans" -- what is the current percentage of people who self-identify as Repubs?
I haven't seen any recent polling, maybe I should dig into the gallup pages. But last polling I saw the percentage was not very big.
