Condi explains the difference between her meeting with Syrian FM and Pelosi 's meeting

http://www.usatoday.com/printedition/news/20070504/a_rice04.art.htm

<snip>

"There's a difference in going to Damascus and having broad-scale discussions about a whole range of issues with Syria, and that was the issue at the time," Rice said. "Having the secretary of State take an opportunity to speak to the foreign minister of Syria about a concrete problem involving Iraq, at an Iraqi neighbors' conference, makes more sense.

"I made clear we don't want to have a difficult relationship with Syria, but we need to have some basis for a better relationship," Rice said.

Rice called Pelosi before this week's trip to Egypt, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.

7. Strictly by design too, it appears.
She had zero interest in this. Might as well have phoned it in. Dubya doesn't want diplomacy, he wants blood.

4. I find it ironic that Pelosi got flack for covering her head...
thus displaying sensitivity for her hosts, but here the Iranian Foreign Minister left a dinner because the entertainment was dressed too revealingly for his comfort.

And then he's mocked for it in the press, by the State Department's spokeman. If Rice were talking to devout evangelicals, say, and they objected to the way the musicians were dressed, you'd hear nothing of it.

Maybe he's a bit sensitive, but can we TRY and take other's thresholds into account, when we're pursuing talks, or is it always "our way or the highway"? I'm so tired of the nonstop tough-guy playground horseshit that passes for diplomacy with these assclowns-in-charge.
