Awesome tornado picture!

Here's a picture of the tornado that devastated Yazoo City, MS - such a beautiful picture for something so devastating .

3. I think I have seen that picture before
and it was, in fact, not a tornado. Looks like one and I could be wrong but I have either seen that picture or one much like it. If I have time before I go I will post it for you.

Still, that does not change a thing about what happened. They are in my thoughts and my heart having been close enough to an F5 to witness it move through my city I know the unreal feeling they are feeling tonight. It is devastating.

I just found it. I do think this one was a tornado although it is often hard to tell but it was in Iowa if I recall. I can't get your link for some reason but it is out there on other sites. Gotta run or I would keep looking.

Thanks

"A huge tornado funnel cloud touches down in Orchard, Iowa, Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at 9:04 p.m. The Globe Gazette and Mitchell County Press News reported that Lori Mehmen of Orchard, took the photo from outside her front door. Mehmen said the funnel cloud came near the ground and then went back up into the clouds. Besides tree and crop damage, no human injuries were reported."

It's a tornado, not a hurricaine, so the "tree-bending" winds are close in. Though I strongly suspect that just after taking those pics the photographer got the hell out of Dodge.

It is one of the more ugly things you might ever be unlucky enough to see. Something that can pick up a fence post and ram it through a child's abdomen as did the one here is not beautiful. It is a killer and it is repulsive.

I had one pass over a Walgreens store I worked at in Florida back in 1999...I remember a guy running into the store screaming for everyone to get away from any windows. Turns out, he was one of these tornado chasers and covering ( bounty ) this story for a local news station since he called one of the directors from the managers office phone.....

While you feel for those that are hurt or killed in the storms, it's still an awesome sight to see. And while a tornado or hurricane or anything may kill, it's not set with the intentions to kill, a tornado just does what a tornado does.

working at a gas station on the west side of town. He was very lucky. He persuaded some customers to take shelter with him and the other employees. The station was damaged but they survived. At the gas station about a block or two away, people took shelter in the restroom. According to the paper at the time, the tornado took everything down except the walls of the restroom they were hiding in.

I lived about 7 miles away, supposedly in the path but it lifted back up before it got to us. I stuffed my kids under the stairs till it was over.

Edited on Sat Apr-24-10 07:54 PM by Shell Beau
I can't even count how many. One I remember strongly as a child. We were hunkered down in the tub with a mattress over our heads. I remember my fence being lifted up and thrown across the neighborhood. Just a couple of years ago, I had 3 trees uprooted in my yard. I've been there. Many times. I live in tornado alley. They are a regular here in the spring and fall.

And 40 miles from it, we still had terrible weather today. It was scary. I am used to it, but it is always scary. I also lived throuh Katrina. I wasn't on the coast, but even when it reached my area, it was still a category 1 with 90+ mph winds. Devastation. But I can still find mother nature beautiful.

them yearly. They yearly hit my neighborhood. When I watch the weather, they, more often than not, have my neighborhood highlighted for the area that will be hit. Just last year, a bus pulled over in my neighborhood, got all of the kids out, and hunkered down in a ditch. I go through tornadoes every year. Twice. Spring and Fall. It is just how it is where I live. I still find tornadoes awesome. In every way. They are magnificent. I hate what they do though.

Sometimes they bounce around. Sometimes they stay on the ground and destroy everything in the way, like they did today. Sometimes, the across the street neighbor will have damage, and I won't. Torndadoes are weird like that, but a sight to behold if you aren't too scared and have enough sanity about you to take cover.

Answer: Not me.

Those of you who got such a thrill out of what has turned out in the end to be death for 10, including 3 children, and pain for others? You might want to ask yourselves "why" and then you might want to think about the answer you get from yourselves.

45. Exactly
I used to have a picture a satellite picture of Katrina or Rita on my old computer, it was a closer up photo of this lovely white clouds. There's no doubt the wreckage left behind from a hurricane or tornado are awful, but at the same point, there's a magnificent creation of nature.

I too have been scared pretty much shitless from a tornado, I've seen the damage they can do, but still respect what nature can do and that man has no control over certain aspects of our lives.

Horrifying and tragic, yes. But a tornado isn't malicious or cruel. It is totally, utterly dispassionate. It is a physical reaction to nature's ongoing dance. It is destructive, terrifying, devastating, and a reminder that no matter how much we kid ourselves, we are never, ever in "control" of nature.

I remember when this happened. I live in Iowa, and this picture was taken
in Orchard, Iowa. Apparently, it's not a funnel cloud or a tornado. It's
some strange weather phenomena--a downdraft, I'm I'm remembering correctly. It
can cause great destruction, but apparently it's not a tornado. Whew!

57. That wasn't the one that hit around here. It is an awesome sight though.
Beautiful.

The one that hit MS wasn't that pretty. It was a mile wide and just looked like a mess of things. It was hard to even distinguish it as a tornado because it was wrapped in rain. Nonetheless, 10 are confirmed dead. 2 of those are children. :( Many more injured.

60. AFter seeing the devastion it did to the town, I am shocked more weren't
killed. So many homes (30 in one neighborhood) and businesses are gone. Tragic.

67. Nature is beautiful, dangerous, humbling and tragic all at the same time
The most beautiful place I have ever seen is Yosemite Valley, a place which claims a dozen lives each year.

72. Looks like some monstrous mouth opening, its tongue dipping down to lick up
everything on the ground in front of it.

:scared:
