Scott Roeder, convicted killer of George Tiller, is not enjoying prison
The man convicted of killing Wichita abortion provider George Tiller is not finding prison's accommodations to his liking.

Scott Roeder has filed a petition complaining about his treatment as well as asking for his release, according to an Associated Press report. A hearing has been scheduled for June 4 in Wichita so Roeder can air his grievances. Roeder is also appealing his murder conviction.

Roeder was found guilty in January of first-degree murder for killing Tiller and sentenced to a "hard 50" sentence, meaning he won't be getting parole for 50 years.

...they could have gotten out, too. Just do a HC petition and complain about how one does not like the conditions in jail.

Scott Roeder ~~ what an asshole.

How about the ever-decreasing cell size?
How about that premeditated executioner be put in a cell that shrinks little by little, every day until it is just big enough to stand up or be crushed? It could start out as a 6 x 9 foot cell, but every day the bars would move toward him, decreasing his cell size. Then, when it becomes too small to even stand, it then shrinks to the size of a womb.

Of course, I don't advocate that kind of cruelty, even for the miserable likes of a premeditated murderer, but I know that's what evil thugs like this murderer truly deserve.

He must not believe in what he did after all, since if he was truly 'gods warrior' as he claimed, he would sit silently in prison and not dispute his guilty verdict. But by fighting his guilty verdict shows him to be the hypocritical, dishonest, fake christian he truly is.

I like your idea a lot though. It would be true justice.

Edited on Wed Apr-21-10 07:21 PM by hyphenate
Men (not all) are control freaks. Abortion (and other choices) takes that control away from them, and they want it back. I've never done any kind of a study on it, but I would think that the men who protest at all these clinics are abusers as well. I know in the past (meaning 100+ years ago) that anytime a woman achieved something, the men who wrote history would gloss it off and attribute it to the man in the house. Many women used male pseudonyms for that very same reason.

73. I'm a white man and I agree with you....
And the fact that there is a segment of the white male population (like Roeder) who are hardcore Fundamentalist Christians who hate women.

And the reason they hate women? Because they still "blame" Eve (women) for tempting Adam and thus the fall of Man in the Garden of Eden. I am not kidding.

89. Yep
I guess, like most of the fundie cult, that Adam and Eve were once as alive as you and me. I just am appalled that they can even assimilate the fact that they never existed. Metaphorically, of course, is one thing, but brass tacks flesh and bone hovers around psychopathy IMHO.

92. so much of fundamentalist religion blames all the evils of life on women.
we are the scapegoat for all those white men. Once outside a church I heard a group of men talking about going to a nearby town and 'beating up and maybe killing' an old woman for the sin of being an atheist!!! Don't think they would have said the same thing about an old man who was an atheist. They just would have called him an eccentric who would eventually come to his senses.

97. You ever try to carry on some kind of conversation with a
fundie concerning abortion? Sooner or later, they will have to throw out the statement of "do you know how many white kids are aborted each year?".

They thrive on white man's power in all matters. They keep getting sicker and sicker.

usually it is the Fundamentalist type religious nuts whose principles include keeping women "in their place".

That is why I believe any woman who joins their fight is something of a victim of "Stockholm Syndrome" or
a female misogynist.

100. I think you know the answer to that. I'm a man, and it's obvious to me.
It's the same reason George Carlin said people who are against abortion are usually people you wouldn't want to have sex with. People who are unattractive and know they'll never have to have an abortion find it easy to oppose abortion.

I suggest that such people, in their rabid opposition to abortion, actually find an outlet for their jealousy towards their more attractive peers.

Edited on Wed Apr-21-10 08:22 PM by KansDem
I always thought it is to Kansas what San Quentin is to California.

...but I could be wrong.

on edit: That's where "Shelley" Shannon is imprisoned after shooting Dr. Tiller in both arms in Wichita in 1993:

At her trial in state court, Shannon testified that there was nothing immoral about trying to kill Tiller. The jurors deliberated for an hour. They convicted her of attempted murder. She was sentenced to 11 years in prison.<5><6>

Shannon signed the Army of God's statement in support of the actions of Paul Jennings Hill while incarcerated in Lansing, Kansas.<7>

On June 4, 1995, she pleaded guilty to setting fires at several abortion clinics in Oregon, California, Idaho and Nevada. She had been indicted by federal grand juries on 30 counts in connection with fires and acid attacks at nine clinics. Charges included arson, interference with commerce by force and interstate travel in aid of racketeering.<8><9> On September 9, 1995, U.S. Federal District Court Judge James A. Redden pronounced Shannon's sentence for these crimes. Departing upward from the applicable federal sentencing guidelines, the Court sentenced Shannon to 20 years in prison. The sentence was set to begin only after Shannon's 10-year incarceration for shooting Tiller is completed.<10>

Her daughter, Angela Shannon (born ca. 1974),<11> was prosecuted for sending a death threat in 1993 to George Woodward, a Milwaukee doctor who performed abortions. (The letter arrived on March 3, 1993 — a week before the murder of David Gunn.) The elder Shannon attempted to take the blame for the death threat, but in view of Angela's fingerprints having been found on the letter, Angela was convicted and sentenced to 46 months' incarceration in 1997.<12>

In 1998, Shelley Shannon filed a lawsuit contending that the sewage system in the Kansas prison was inadequate, and that sewage backups created unhealthful conditions for the inmates. Her lawsuit was dismissed by Federal District Court Judge Kathryn Vratil in Kansas City, Kansas. The dismissal was upheld by a 2-1 vote of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.<13>

And look at the bright side: You have lots and lots of time to read your Bible.

103. I know that generalizations are wrong, but I think no one who has ever been shot has enjoyed it
In fact the screams, agonizing pain, and the dying part of the equation leads me to believe that getting shot and dying is not a very pleasurable experience in the least.

44. I hope he hates
prison with a passion. I hope he hates it more than he hates abortion doctors. I hope the other prisoners take their hatred of prison out on him. I hope he lives a long long life - in prison.

I'm usually a compassionate person, but I do have my limits. He is there to be punished for committing murder. It's not supposed to be a day at the spa. If he said, "heck, prison ain't so bad", I would be very disappointed.

I really think he was expecting to be set free and praised for his crimes. It hasn't struck him yet that this is all REAL!

62. If he complains loudly and long it might make other murderers think twice
before they decide to 'martyr' themselves by killing abortion providers. Let them see their hero be a crybaby and make a fool of himself by demanding what he doesn't deserve and won't get.

Rot in it, you shitbag.

And of course, he's such a SuperDuper faithful Christian, I bet that it will never dawn on him to think, "Wow, maybe our penal system isn't so great - maybe conditions in prison really are inhumane, and I could use my energy and my remaining years to try to make the experience more humane for EVERYONE in the system, because I think Jesus would say that even criminals deserve to be treated like human beings".

He'll never do that.

"Oh, you mean he doesn't like prison? Well, let's get him outta there immediately!" LOL.

Sorry Roeder, there's plenty of people experiencing the same thing you are for doing a lot less. You're going to stay there for years and years and years, and in time, no one will remember you or the "noble" act you performed. You wasted your life and you ended another. Now sit in your cell for a few decades and ponder that.

murderers, such as yourself.

Guess that tells us where Scott falls on the scale. I'm so enjoying this story. Not only did he discredit the 'pro-life' movement by committing a senseless murder, he now discredits them by whining about not liking prison.

98. I will not gloat about the suffering of another human being...
Edited on Thu Apr-22-10 06:35 PM by liberation
... but I will not waste my concern with someone who killed another human being in such cold blooded manner, esp. his level of premeditation is what I found utterly inhuman and disturbing.

The entitlement that led him to think he can simply write a petition to leave prison, because it is not of his liking, is rather appalling to be honest. It points that this murderer does not have any remorse whatsoever, because he has not even began to grasp the magnitude of his crime. In fact chances are he has such a personality disorder that he may see himself as the victim in all this.I am willing to wager he and the rest of his fundamentalist pals are, at a very basic level, people with very very very flawed personalities. Due to all sorts of mental disorders most likely.

Not that it excuses their actions, but we need to come with grasps as a society that the brain, like any other organ is prone to disease, I wonder how many lives and broken families could have been saved if people would have access to proper mental health care from the get go. It is also time for us to realize, that a lot of the inflammatory rhetoric being spewed freely by a lot of the religious extremists should not be tolerated. Period. Words have consequences. Freedom of expression ends where it causes people to lose their lives.
