Kooks on television
For years and years I have been enthusiastically in favor of having the kookiest, nuttiest, wackiest extremists on television. The weirder and crazier, the better. The more hateful the better.

The theory, I'm sure, is obvious. No rational person will agree with the teevee kook. The teevee kook will be seen as kooky. Their views will automatically be diminished or totally discredited.

I have changed my view.

I think allowing these knuckle walkers to spew their crap on live teevee helps their cause more than it hurts them. My new theory is that the country's "normal" capacity to think critically has been diminished by . . . . kooks on television.

People who can still think critically view the mouth breathers as patently kookie. The problem is that fewer and fewer people think critically. And thus the kook starts to sound normal. Even reasonable.

We're no less smart than we ever were. We're just lazier. Lots lazier and lazier in ever way. That includes intellectual laziness.

That makes them even more effective at presenting their world view.

And of course they're welcomed by the media. They're cheap entertainment. What next? Their own "reality" show. Can you see it now?

Kooks on Television.

1. What's all this fuss about coots on television?
I watch Larry King, an I have to say he has a very good program. Then there's Regis, and he . . . what's that? KOOKS on television? Oh, well, that's different. Never mind . . .
