LAST and LATEST BATCH: ICELAND VOLCANO (pic heavy)
Edited on Tue Apr-20-10 04:04 PM by AsahinaKimi
Edited: Added a few more photos, and some commentary from the website.

In this picture made available by NEODASS/University of Dundee shows the volcanic ash plume from Iceland, top left, to the north of Britain at received by NASA's Terra Satellite at 11.39 GMT Thursday April 15, 2010.

In this picture made available by the Icelandic Coastguard, taken Wednesday April 14, 2010, smoke and steam rises from the volcano under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in Iceland, which erupted for the second time in less than a month, melting ice, shooting smoke and steam into the air and forcing hundreds of people to flee rising floodwaters. Authorities evacuated 800 residents from around the glacier as rivers rose by up to 10 feet (3 meters). Emergency officials and scientists said the eruption under the ice cap was 10 to 20 times more powerful than one last month, and carried a much greater risk of widespread flooding. 22. Hi Lars!!

:hi:

I'm glad you made it safely home!

18 hours is a major inconvenience of course, but... at least you made it back!

I keep hearing these (real life horror) stories about people being stranded for days/weeks... :(

24. Yes its pretty bad
One guy on the train had been travelling from Portugal, another from Istanbul.

The express train from Hamburg to Copenhagen was so overbooked, the platform was full of people when the train was full. Probably 6-700 people too many, and the German train company had only gotten four additional buses.

It certainly shows how dependent we are on air travel even for short distances around Europe. It would be interesting to see if anyone has checked the air pollution levels during this thing and see of it has dropped.

why do they have lightening associated with the explosions. Is this something that happens all the time, or is it with this volcano only..

26. It's static from all the ash moving around.
It's all volcanoes that produce so much ash.

Although the quality of the photos is getting better these days. I don't know if that's something to do with improvements in digital photography, or what.
