What Conservatives Mean When They Say "Libertarian" - Daily Kos
Sounds about right,to me.

The difference between actual Libertarians and Republicans hiding from their tarnished name is quite easy. Actual Libertarians are concerned about the freedom of individuals. Conservatives use Libertarian as a code word meaning "I want to continue to enjoy all the privileges I do now, but I don't want to share them with you and most of all I don't want to pay any taxes." Push come to shove, they're happy to abbreviate that to "Screw freedom. I just don't want to pay taxes."

2. it is also like the supposed fleeing from "liberal" to "progressive"
that RW radio has created as an actual truth when it is not

"Conservatives" and "Republican" are toxic right now and they are avoiding using those words

4. Meaningless Word
The GOP uses the term libertarian as in order to sound cool and hip. True libertarians would support human rights like allowing gays and lesbians to get married, unlike Glenn Beck who jizzes his pants whenever he talks about Rick Santorum.

16. Which is such a direct contrast to the somewhat ernest way they were in 1988 when he ran.

6. At it's most basic..

.. it is libertarian thought (deregulate, deregulate and more deregulate) that brought you the current economic debacle. So "libertarian" sounds better than "republican" only to the ignorant.

I'll pass on libertarianism, though I agree with them on EVERYTHING except business/economics.

13. There's no such thing as a libertarian
Sorry, but it's true. All you left-libertarians? You've got nothing that makes you different from liberals.

And these right-libertarians? They're actually worse than Republicans. At least your average republican will go "Well, hey now wait a minute, I kind of like not having toll roads and for-profit fire departments"
